“Imagine being magically whisked away to...Delaware.”

Until yesterday, my only Delaware experience was watching Wayne's World back in the day - the scene where Wayne's doing his cable access TV show and the topic of Delaware comes up. And he has absolutely nothing to say.

I thought it was kind of sad that there were no National Park Service sites of any kind in DE (no national cemetery, no national battlefield, no nothing). So I figured at the very least the state deserved its own blog entry, but I didn't know what to write about.

Well, guess what? One of our newest team members, Carleigh Bell (photos to come), was actually born in Delaware. (I know, I was like "What?!") And she's here to inform the world that Delaware does have parks - state parks - and some very nice ones at that, thank you very much. She recommends Cape Henlopen, where she spent many summers growing up.

Which brings me to my next point - even if you haven't got a national park near you, there are plenty of state and regional parks that are absolutely worth a visit. So go!

I think this tip would have been much better if you had talked about how parks are expanding their lodging options. You can sleep on the ground up to staying in something luxuriously comfortable. There are tents, teepess, cabins, yurts, lodges, etc. So there is something for everyone's comfort and spending level.

It is true that Delaware has no nationally designated points of interest. But just check out http://www.visitdelaware.com/ to see some of the very interesting, historical, scenic, and cultural locations that we do have.

I am going to do this today!! We have the awesome opportunity to visit State parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) out of local materials that have hotels or cabins. Some have kitchenettes, so eating in saves a little cash. It takes a little research and planning ahead, but it is totally worth it ans much more relaxing than scurrying to 10 million tourist traps in the shortest time frame! Also, we are traveling up the old highway. It's a slow old school style vacation. :)

Years ago, I piled my daughter, niece, nephew and his friend (all under 15 yrs.) into a rented van and we went camping in Aspen (Maroon Bells). It was my first camping trip ever!! and I was the only adult. For the trip, I rented old radio shows for the kids to listen to in the van (i.e.,"The Giant Worm", "The Shadow",etc. That was a hoot!) Our tent was close to a rushing creek - we cooked on the two-burner stove propane stove, hiked in the mountains. It was a challenge with four kids, but they still talk about it, and I had a blast!

It doesn't have to be National Parks, though they have some of the most pristine lands in many cases. Look around locally and you will find many campgrounds, National Forests and other areas that you can visit to have a close to nature retreat. The places close by may be smaller but you can use them for weekend getaways instead of week long vacations.

Support the National Parks, especially when you are asked to send emails to get them additional funding. They are sorely lacking in funds & need more money for upkeep. We vacationed out West last year(Grand Canyon,Zion,Bryce Canyon,Arches). Truly breathtaking!! They really are our national traesures :)

Thanks for the Delaware shout-out as I too am a Delaware native. Along with the state parks there are also great National Wildlife Refuges in Delaware, like Bombay Hook (great birdwatching). Check this site for more info on DE parks and recreation http://www.destateparks.com/ I am currently living in Alaska and working at a National Historical Park. I'm plugging the NPS Junior Ranger program for those of you with children or those who are big kids yourself. At least 297 NPS protected areas have FREE Junior Ranger programs (activity books). Upon completing the activities, participants receive a badge specific to the park and/or a sew-on badge (varies between each park). What a great challenge to earn all 297+ badges!
