Here at the Bite, Jen and I split biz duties in order to serve you all to the best of our abilities. Because of this work allocation, I look after editorial "stuff," and each week, I get to assign who writes which blogs. I like this gig. It makes me feel all powerful. Sometimes, if I love a topic, I get to wax poetic on it, and other times I get to offload the topics I hate onto poor Cricket (who occasionally stands in for Jen).
But every so often, when feeling quite magnanimous, I send Jen a list of blogs for the week that gives her the choice to pick between 2 different topics and write on whichever one strikes her fancy. In those cases, I write the alternate blog that she DOESN'T want to write. Well, like an idiot, this week, I told Jen she could choose between the tequila blog and the condoms blog (I mean face it - they're sort of similar topics). I should have known better. Of COURSE Jen chose tequila and left me holding the (um, er) bag with the condoms tip. So rather than go into gory detail, let me just say this: trash ‘em when you are done. This is information we all don't want to think about, but the fact is, used condoms have to be fished out of sewage treatment plants by hand anyway (and then are landfilled), so you are just prolonging the inevitable by flushing. Of course, in other ways, "prolonging the inevitable" can be a good thing when it comes to condom talk. But that is a discussion to be had over a glass of wine. Or a shot of tequila. -Heather... off to call my parents and assure them that I'm still a virgin... Well, my partner and I have been doing OUR part to cut back on the population! We are over 45...(lets NOT attempt to use those 40something eggs shall we!) and we are Lesbians...for over 15 years. My honey has an 18 yr old son, the light of our lives from a prior marriage. HE is very aware of the need to use condoms to prevent unplanned babies and prevent disease. At this point he’s still a Virgin, and it appears he is actually interested in having a real relationship, rather than just jumping into sex for the sake of his personal jollies! He’s pretty tickled that the girls like to call him, and we just keep hoping he’ll continue to make good, caring, smart choices and that no one feels unloved. Something must be ok, he says he doesn’t like the way other boys in school talk about girls sometimes, even though he too in interested in the whole idea, he’s not a “player.” I appreciate the advice to not have any more children running free in the world. These choices should be made very carefully and most people do not do so. However, I have to disagree with the idea of condoms. I prefer the pill. I used condoms at one time but found that when I was not properly aroused before starting, it chafed badly. When we used lubricant, it was not fun as all that extra slipperiness caused me to lose all feeling between the thighs. I am now considering a hysterectomy due to my problems with menstruation. This too will save the planet as there will be fewer maxi pads going into the trash. I encourage everyone to think carefully before having children. There are so many unwanted children born every day that there are many who would want to be adopted by caring parents. Don’t forget that it’s much more important to be a Mommy or a Daddy than a mother or father. Being married, and done having children I have chosen an IUD as my preferred contraceptive of choice...a personal decision, but with the added benefit of no refuse to discard.
Condoms, smondoms. Not everyone likes to use them. While they have their good points (cheap, easy birth control and anti-STD), they have their bad, too. Consider the additional trash and the resources made to produce them. One other commenter mentions the birth control pill. Isn’t 100 percent effective nor does it work for everyone. Besides that, the artificial hormones may be linked to cancers. And, the hormones you ingest go straight into our water system and aren’t totally filtered out. What about fertility awareness methods? It requires zero consumption and an understanding partner. It’s not just for religious reasons, either. No artificial hormones and no extra trash. Here’s a website to get you started ... http://www.sisterzeus.com/. I am against artificial contraceptives for religious reasons. Natural family planning is up to 98% effective, and can be used to either try to get pregnant or avoid pregancy. Plus, you don’t have to worry about any waste at all- you don’t need pills manufactured or anything. Google “natural family planning” and see what you get. Birth control (whether the pill, the implant or the patch) and “natural family planning” may be fine for anyone in a committed, monogamous relationship where both partners have been tested, but if you’re still playing the field, or you and your partner have not been tested, WRAP IT UP! Respect yourself and your body enough to not risk getting a disease! No other contraceptive method protects against STD’s--just condoms. However, currently in development stages, is the most incredible contraceptive/STD preventative method ever! Keep your ears open for Microbicides-- these are topically applied, hormone-free gels and creams that are currently being tested and are showing great results both as contraceptives and for thier ability to prevent EVERY STD! Very exciting! Wow, you Biters be smart. AmberRaven, I definitely will keep my, ahem, ears open for the microbicides. Rock on. I fell deeply in love with a very attractive young widow with two young children. She had been celibate for most ten years and being well aquainted around our small town seeing a doctor for prescription contraceptives was out. When we could no longer avoid sex and not wanting to start a new family we used rubbers. She didn’t want the evidence of our love making in her waste basket so I flushed the rubbers down the toilet. After marrying we continued to use condoms for birth control as they have worked extremely well without failure. I can’t understand why so many dislike sex with a condom. My dear wife and I use them by choice and enjoy wonderful sex. It is nice to know, when deep in your woman that you can ejaculate and the rubber is rendering it an act of love rather than procreation. A nice way to think about a condom, rather than hating using one. Birth Control by Injection Birth control by injection is an effective alternative used which has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most effective and popular form of this type of contraceptive is Depo-Provera. This injection works in the same way as the hormonal pill Progestogen. It does not contain estrogen. The pregnancy prevention begins after twenty four hours of the injection. This injection prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. The woman has to take the injection once every twelve weeks. That means this injection can be given every three months and you do not have to take it regularly like the pills. Keepcondom.com Hi, on the discussion of condoms, does anybody know where to get hold of condoms with a a paraben free lubricant? |
Each of you can help control population growth more effectively by supporting the work of organizations teaching reproductive health in third world countries. For example, I like the methods and results of World Neighbors, http://www.wn.org.
I’d guess a few dollars sent to them would prevent five to ten times as many unwanted pregnancies, as compared to the same dollars used for birth control in this country.
