Contortionist Cleaning

Whether washing your hands in a public bathroom actually gets rid of germs or attaches more to you probably depends on the place, but for my part, I don't really see the point in scrubbing up, only to then put my freshly cleaned mitts on a faucet and door handle that strangers-who-have-touched-god-knows-what have wielded. So if I need to wash hands before, say, eating out at a restaurant, my choices are to a) use a liquid hand-sanitizer or b) wash my hands in the bathroom, then use my forearm and/or elbow to turn on the faucet and turn the door handle on my way out.

I recommend that latter, if you can bust the moves, since it means one less thing to carry around and one less plastic bottle to recycle. If you use a paper towel to dry, you can even use it as a kind of mitten until you've opened the door, then hold the door with your body, crumple the mitten, and shoot for the trash can. It's fun. Try it, and see.

speaking of washing hands, cleanliness, etc. here is what I do mostly at the grocery story, but also at restaurants and so on. Wash your hands in nice soapy (cold) water; dry them on ONE paper towel, making sure it gets some wet-soapy on it; use the towel to open the door handle on the way out of thebathroom - can you imagine how dirty it is? then use it to wipe well the handle of your grocery cart - also probably filthy dirty - keep the towel to use it as you see fit as you shop, then throw it away at checkout. A cleaner way to shop!
I am more than willing to wash in cold water, except when it means freezing my butt off or my kids butt off. Cold water in cold weather is not pleasant and can be painful in my situation.
I didn't use hand sanitizers when they first came out. That's because I have a touch of psoriasis, and those hand sanitizers, being mostly isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, made my already-dry skin even drier. But now, there are hand sanitizers with aloe. Those are terrific, and they're the ones I use.
Not a bad suggestion, but would be great if Ideal Bite could amend the tip with a recommendation from some objective source for the hand washing time that you need to do to get rid of germs. I think it's something like 20-30 seconds (sing Happy birthday to yourself, and apparently that does the trick) and is it okay to not use soap? is it the time plus the vigorous smooshing of your hands together? but i did go EWWWW when I read the factoid about men not washing their hands after using the little boys room. I sent it to my husband, not that he forgets to wash, but just to remind him anyway. That's a career no-no...
