Ask a Scientist SF
Last Tuesday I dragged my cold-ridden body to SF's Ask a Scientist, a monthly lecture/Q&A session on different science disciplines. November's presenter was Daniel Gluesenkamp from the Audubon Society, speaking on invasive species.

Loved it. The idea is you get a drink, maybe some food (c/o the excellent Axis Café), and hear about something science-related you might never have thought about, or at least never thought could be interesting. And it's free.

Era of Ignorance
The results are in on the latest Pew global warming survey, and it looks like the citizens of the United States just lost a bunch of Mensa points: 14% fewer Americans believe there's solid evidence of global warming than did a year and a half ago. And just 35% of Americans believe climate change is a very serious issue, down from 44% in April '08. Wha' happen?

In related news, this survey I just made up found that 59% of Americans believe in unicorns.

Reuse
My mom does a lot of pottery-making, and for one reason or another, ends up with a lot of broken shards (or pieces that just didn't turn out right). The best use for them? Garden accessories. Here's a pic of a recent addition to my parents' backyard - a mosaic at the base of a veranda post - mostly made using toss-away pieces.

Space Junk
The Mother Nature Network recently released its list of the Top 15 most toxic places to live (everyone, not least of all Molly, was shocked to learn that LA did not make the list).

It turns out that Earth's orbit ought to be every space station resident's worst nightmare because it's so full of trash from abandoned space ships and satellites stuck circling the globe. Pretty crazy.

International Day of Climate Action
In case you missed it, Saturday was the International Day of Climate Action. Huffington Post put together a slideshow of the cutest kids doing their part. My vote's with the bespectacled Finns.

Hybrid / Electric Cars
Little-known fact: I spend my nights and weekends working on another project, Where's Lulu - a website where people can review restaurants and shops based on their accessibility.

So I've been meaning to cover what I think is an interesting, green vs. disability topic: Are hybrid cars too silent?

The National Federation for the Blind thinks so - blind people can't hear them coming when they're walking down the street. The organization's asking carmakers to add the equivalent of noisemakers to hybrid cars. NPR did a test, and it's hard not to see where the Federation's coming from.

On a related note, Nissan's new electric car, the Leaf, will likely make noises Read the full post...

Save Your Logo Campaign
Everybody knows the little green Lacoste crocodile logo - now the company's trying to save it.

Lacoste joins several other Save Your Logo companies that are coming together to preserve the endangered species they're associated with.

With all the brand mileage they've gotten out of the animals, it seems only fair.

Climate Change
Per today's Daily Tip, we don't usually get directly political on Ideal Bite, but think maybe that climate change is worth an email to your senator:

Dear [Senator],

As a voter in your state, I realize that issues like health care and the economy are important, but I'm asking that you don't forget the environment among your many priorities.

I believe that topics such as global warming, waste production, and energy use deserve our attention. Please consider the planet as you help to shape upcoming climate change legislation.

Thank you,
[Your name]

West Coast Green
On Friday Erica and I went to West Coast Green, a big, yearly design conference here in SF. Companies showcased tons of sweet, new products and technology. Some favorites:
  • Lemnis LED light bulbs - next generation LED bulbs are brighter, last 25 years, and even work with dimmers. (That's E and I with very dapper Lemnis founder Warner Philips, great grandson of the Philips electronics dude.) You heard it here first - LEDs are the new CFLs.
  • Mateveza IPA - just-released version of the mate/beer blend doesn't have the bite of your average IPA, making it a great choice for

Deforestation and Global Warming
Even after years of working on environmental issues, I was surprised to read in this week's Economist that "at the moment, carbon emissions from deforestation account for some 18% of global greenhouse-gas emissions, more than all the world’s trains, cars, lorries, aeroplanes and ships combined."

Yep - even including the lorries, people. And that's not just from losing trees. It's also because of the CO2 released from the illegal burning of forests. That's the way many farmers in the Amazon de-forest, so's they can use the land for farming.

A new way to combat deforestation in the Amazon? Paying people who live there not to destroy Read the full post...
