Fascinated by Fabrics

Growing up in the polyester 70s and the rayon 80s and the oversized cotton plaids 90s, fabrics came in 3 flavors.  Occasionally, silk entered the mix, annoying in its need for drycleaning and inability to shun stains, or itchy wool that never seemed able to move with grace from the cold outdoors to heated interiors...

So I have to admit to a fascination with all these alternative fabrics cropping up these days.  From soy to bamboo to lyocell to organic version of your favorite cottons... clothes shopping has never been so varied.  Sure, they are eco, but beyond that - they are also beautiful, soft, textured and fabulous.

This conversation went on a long time ago - but I do need to put right what was said about organic cotton using more water than conventional - this is absolutely untrue: the Aral Sea has not dried up due to ORGANIC cotton - look to conventional cotton for this. The conventional cotton which makes millions ill each year, which kills hundreds of thousands and which is a major cause of sustaining poverty and malnutrition... - and in fact there is documented evidence of a plantation in India whose owner has received the President's Medal for his work on land management systems which actually end up with water being ADDED to the water table at the end of the day and NOT removed... Bamboo silk might be ecologically sound in its growing - but it is far from it in the processing... it also takes a very long time to dry (which makes it hopeless for nappies as although they absorb wonderful amounts, they take a week to dry naturally!) - bamboo linen, which is retted like flax linen is fine, the silk consumes far too many chemicals... And as for not eating meat - well vegan interests obviously predispose to this sort of statement but do not present the whole picture... the really good advice it to be choosy and not eat too much meat. Just how much vegetable protein could be grown in the mountains of Wales for example? the answer? Virtually none... but those mountains can sustain sheep, whose digestive systems are truly suited for eating a diet of grass. Buy locally produced meat and limit your intake - and you will all ensure that there is no need for rainforests to be destroyed.
