Fashion Smashion...Unless It's Eco
NY Fashion Week is finally coming to a close…and I can't say I mind. For one week, Bryant Park becomes a mad house with self-important fashionistas, pushy reporters (trust me, I used to be one for Us Weekly and Life & Style Weekly), stressed out PR reps, and not to mention those shouting PETA activists. Don't get me wrong, Fashion Week in NY is an amazing event with a ton of brilliant designers. But after many years of waiting in line for a 15-minute show that starts an hour late, I'm happy this year I skipped the tent and went downtown for the down-to-earth Green Shows instead. Models strutted their stuff at the King of Greene Street boutique to the likes of:
Bodkin: Designer Eviana Hartman from NY creates girly garb out of organic cotton, organic wool, artisanal dyes, and recycled polyester.
Izzy Lane: English designer Isobel Davies rescues sheep set to be put down and ethically raises them on her Sheep Sanctuary. Most of her garments are made from their wool and the collection has a cozy UK vibe.
Bahar Shahpar: Brooklyn-based designer of the same name whips up Edwardian duds using eco-fabrics.
House of Organic: Trendy pieces made from organic fabrics by Swedish-born Johanna Hofring.
Lara Miller: A Chicago-based designer who uses organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, lyocell, and recycled organic cotton for her femme shirts, dresses, and skirts.
Mr. Larkin: This SF designer whips up ethereal duds with biodegradable milk fiber fabric, organic cotton, and handmade plant dyes.
Study by Tara St. James: Making cutting-room scraps into wearable pieces, this NY designer has a unique collection of jewelry and clothing - all from recycled bits.
