Fever Pit(ch)

Like Jen, I tend to reserve the aluminum antiperspirant junk for "special" occasions when I know that I may experience some modicum of stress - usually social anxiety, which is only made worse by thoroughly unattractive underarm sweat stains. So, sure, it works, but another sorry side effect of using it is that the chemical reaction of deodorant, sweat, and certain clothing fibers can actually create tough stains or even spoil delicate fabrics. If you end up with a stained shirt or blouse, don't dry clean it, whatever you do - it can actually set the stain and permanently discolor your garments. Instead, get a good stain remover and wash your stuff by hand. I love Laundress products so much I could marry them, and its recipe for removing pit stains really works - the stain remover is the best I've tried.

As an aside, another natural deodorant I've tried and liked - though I've found that you do need to reapply throughout the day - is Tom's Natural Stick in Lavender. It actually feels really soothing to such delicate skin and smells, well, like lavender.

I've used Tom's of Maine deodorants in the past, and they're good, but they do contain propylene glycol. However, I seriously doubt that Tom's would use such an ingredient if it were any kind of harmful substance like a neurotoxin, as Ideal Bite claims it is. As for talc containing asbestos, well, MAYBE it does, but I'm sure that whatever asbestos it DOES contain, if any, is in such minute amounts you'd have to use TONS of the stuff over a lifetime for it to have any detrimental effects. The same goes for parabens being carcinogenic. I'm not THAT paranoid. Redhawk, I like your idea of using straight baking soda as a deodorant, I thought of that, too, but the thing about baking soda is, although it IS a great deodorant (I always keep some on hand for deodorization purposes), it's not an antiperspirant, and I just can't imagine NOT using an antiperspirant. Perspiration stains are just plain unsightly, ALMOST as unsightly as unshaven armpits. I've been using Suave deodorant myself, and, yes, it does have aluminum, but I get it because it's a good antiperspirant, it smells really nice, and it's CHEAP! Besides, I don't use it every day; I don't need to. I might check out some of the less chemical-ly products mentioned in this thread, but I would try only those that keep you dry, odor free, don't have to be applied more than once a day, or, better yet, even every two or three days, and don't cost a small fortune. (I adamantly REFUSE to pay $10.00 for something that needs to be reapplied several times a day! What's the point?)
"ALMOST as unsightly as unshaven armpits" Just wondering....(aimlessly)...Are guys armpit hairs..."PRETTIER" than women's???? I can't recall a single guy in the past 50 years that shaved his pits....not a blooming one of them... an, um...no offence...but I don't recall a single one of their damp, curly, straight, dark or light hairs being especially charming...alluring...or anything other than functional..in that they helped hold the ummm...shall we say...dewy moisture on a hot day to help with the cooling system.... Guess I'm lucky...no sweat stains under my pits....although...I really hate how I sweat more at the hairline behind my ears....the back of my neck sometimes and the middle of my back on a scorcher of a day...if I'm also doing physical labor outside in the heat...yuck-o!
I used Alba deoderant for about a year. That was about all I could take of it. I felt better about not putting all the nasty stuff on my pits, but I stank. Bad. My whole family sweats a lot. And eventually that sweat starts to stink. At the end of a 12-hour work day, I felt bad for the patients I was bending over, praying that they didn't smell what I was smelling. I've switched back to regular anti-perspirant. I still get wetness sometimes, but I don't stink anymore. I realize that there might be some natural product out there that works for my particular chemistry, but who can afford to search for it? I can't see spending $5+ a pop for something to try it out for a week only to find out that it doesn't work for me.
melaluca does have a deoderent, called Body Satin & it works well.
I've used different brands of the crystal deodorants, and they all have the same problem.... they don't last very long if you sweat more than a tiny bit, so summer usage is out. And after a couple of months, they tend to start smelling rank. Ones with baking soda work relatively well, again if you don't sweat alot. Is there anything natural that works as well as the prescription strength deodorant? My oldest son, who hit puberty a couple of years ago, can only use the extra-strength ones. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I highly recommend the miessence organic deodorant. the two main ingredients are baking soda and aloe vera. It actually really really works. And I exercise a lot. I ride my bike to work (45 min) and don't have to reapply when I get there. It works so well I can even skip a day if I need to. As it is hard to find in shops, I order it online: http://mensorganics.mionegroup.com:80/en/category/3/3 Anti-perspirants are bad not just because of the nasty stuff in them, but because they stop you sweating, which is your body's natural mechanism for eliminating toxins. It is very healthy to sweat. We just need to change our perceptions of what is normal. Sweat is normal, but it doesn't have to be smelly!
I have tried Toms of Maine Lavender Stick and Crystal roll on deoderant and both after a time of use they irritated my armpits so badly. Burning, peeling, painful...Thanks for all of the other comments with some other deoderants and such to try. I don't mind sweating or even smelling from time to time, but the burning was awful!
After going thru the life change...i noticed an underarm odor, which i never had a problem with odor...after many dollars spent I found that THAI crystal deodorant roll-on...ingredients mineral salt and filtered water.
i've tried everything in the market, even baking soda, apple cider vinegar and lavilin cream but still, they didn't work with me. now i'm thinking, does the stink have something to do with body acidity? don't know what to do anymore, still have this problem. would really appreciate your help
also, noticed that the air-conditioning brings out the smell because when i step outside of an air-conditioned room, the smell disappears or somehow gets better. i'm wondering what could have been the cause of smelling after spending 2-4 hours in places with AC? could that be a symptom of any disease?
