The Great Dehydration Scare

Who knew that we were all at such risk of constant dehydration? I mean pick up a magazine or watch an ad on tv, and sooner or later, you'll be convinced that your body is in severe need of hydration, electrolytically imbalanced and lacking in peak performance.

Oh puhlease.  When I grew up, kids playing sports drank... well, water.  And that water?  It came from a tap, not a plastic bottle with a label.

But if I were buying the need for electrolytic sports drinks (and trust me - as a girl who occasionally imbibes too much of a different kind of liquid, there is something miraculous about potassium-laden sports drinks for a hangover cure), you can rest assured that I would be reaching for the ONE Natural Coconut water.  As with many things, I was a complete skeptic until I tried it.

I promise - that stuff is GOOD.

-Heather... off to remember a world where a bench of kids playing basketball all drank out of the same refillable water bottles...

Coconut"water" is Not water! It's the endosperm of young coconuts. Yeah, you read it right...endoSPERM.I couldn't stop laughing when I saw people marketing it by claiming it hydrates you. This stuff is a dieretic because, among other things, it's high in potassium. Concerned about being dehydrated? Drink plain old water....it's still the best way to replenish...and won't give you all the empty calories these over priced pee makers do. :)
I don't like the smell or taste of these products. Even if I did, I wouldn't buy them because they are far from eco-friendly. The tetrapaks aren't easlily recyclable and the products are imported from Brazil. Their carbon footprints are enormous and contribute to global climate change. Remember, BUY LOCALLY!!!
Coconut water is very high in potassium versus other electolytes which which makes it a dehydrant.... not a rehydrant. Anyway, unless your an extreme athelete that does intense exercise that last more than 5 hours you don't need to worry about depleting your electrolyte levels. Water before and after exercise is by far the best way to stay fully hydrated. And well-balanced diet is the key to proper electrolyte levels. If you are an extreme athelete, Gatorade, and it's kin are still a far better choice than coconut water.
Zico is by far the best coconut water out there. They have 2 flavors with no added fat like vita-coco. They also give back to the communities that they get their coconuts from. I buy mine at whole foods. www.zico.com

Hi, Cathy. You can be allergic only to Proteins. Young green cocconut is not aptotein source and it is naturally grown and chec your liver, kidney and colon. Try to eat raw foods, chew it well, eat local or organic with no additives and you will be well soon Good luck! Stay alert to commercial foods. Mila
just wanted to clarify that potassium is NOT a diuretic. If you have too much of it, your kidneys will get rid of it (if they are healthy) - but the kidney is complex and this does not necessarily mean you will lose more water from the body. I can't find any suggestion that potassium is a diuretic so I'm not sure where the above statements (Marty & Jois) came from.
