Hey, Hey Trashy Lady

When "the supe" (my roommate who moonlights as our property manager) brought home this adorable little green compost bucket, provided free with a box of BioBags by SF's titan of trash Sunset Scavenger, our household went off with Christmas-morning-like glee (it's the little things, you know?). We've been recycling religiously for years, duh, but cutting out the organic matter from our personal waste streams chopped our actual trash output in half. Half! So, yeah, we're lucky to live in San Francisco where SS will pick up our compost curbside biweekly, but, for those of you without that luxury in your town, there's always pocket mulching, right?

I have yet to find biodegradeable trash bags that are true to their name. All the ones that I have found don't entirely break down. They still leave little particles floating around in the air. Still better than a plain old plastic bag! We have eliminated trash bags all together in my house. We went old school! Of course we are careful of packaging that we buy. Most of the stuff we buy these days is recyclable. We are also fortunate to have green waste pick up in our neighborhood.....Until we get the composting program down to a science we green waste all of our raw food. Our garbage can is nearly empty every week!
Hi from Malaysia. Just wondering too about trash bags. We need to pack up our trash (no matter how little) in plastic bags for the garbage collectors. Is there any alternative or solutions for the use of these plastic bags?
I would say that lots of companies are doing their best to manufacture plastic bags that are better for the environment. In fact, the company I represent, Jig-A-Loo, has recently introduced a new line of plastic bags called EconoGreen that are made from: 100% recycled plastic 100% oxodegradable 100% recyclable. These EconoGreen bags and drop cloths contain an additive that will completely break down within 2 years after use. Considerably less than traditional plastic bags and especially grocery bags that we often use as garbage bags. For more information, visit the Jig-A-Loo website at http://www.jigaloo.com/us/e_products_econogreen.php
