If You Buy It, He Will Come

After a few more forays out to try to find vintage dresses, I determined that it was going to be impossible to get JUST the right dress that way, unless I happened upon it nearly accidentally. See, just as these dresses have required time and seasoning to reach their vintage juicy-ness, in order to squeeze the best out of your vintage shopping experience, you need to give yourself some time and space to find the PERFECT dress for you.

There are amazing finds online, but you need to order them, try them, and send back the rejects. Likewise, there are amazing finds in little shops all over, but again, you need time to search in an unhurried manner, find the perfect alterations expert and cleaner, and then craft the ideal look and feel to complement the dress.

If you - like me - are planning an entire wedding in 5 months, the leisurely pace that vintage requires is just not an option. (I found this sad, since I kind of had my heart set on that.)

So - advice to single women the world over: even if you aren’t even dating and there is not a glimmer of a wedding on the horizon; or if you have decided to stay unmarried forever, in exchange for a lifetime of celibacy or wanton cougar-laden lust (I get it - really, I do)… If there is just the remotest possibility that you may ever want to get a killer vintage white(ish) gown, start trying them on. Wander into that random shop after Sunday brunch. Troll around online. And if you find the perfect dress and can make it happen financially, buy it. (Layaway?) Later on, you won’t regret it. Vintage has it all - history, beauty, luxury, high-quality, and often, a lower price tag. And oh yeah - it’s eco as hell. (Oh, and lie, ladies. Just flat-out tell the store clerk that you are engaged - even if you spent the previous evening Googling your ex. I’m telling you - it’s fun to shop for dresses.)

Fact is, you might just find the PERFECT gown two years before you find the PERFECT man.

You are so right, and not only for weddings. Stopping in those little shops all the time pays off for those special gifts, and special event clothing. It pays to think ahead!
Buying a wedding dress is a big event. If I spot something I really like today, and I don't even have a boyfriend, it might not be of much value when the big day comes. If I am destined to get married 10 years from now, who knows maybe at that point I will be wearing plus size clothing, so there will be no way I will squeeze myself into this dream dress I bought a decade ago.
