Not a Single Fan

Until I moved into my current place, I'd always had fans in the shared bathrooms at home.

But now, in addition to being fanless, our bathroom is really echo-ey, so if you happen to be hanging out in the hallway while someone's in the bathroom, you're gonna get an earful. I was shy at first, waiting for opportune moments when the place was empty to take care of business.

Then, the topic of the bathroom came up in conversation with my roommates. We all joked about our bathroom broadcasts, which helped us all get over it, and now I've got no fear, echoes or no echoes.

hmmm.. I have never thought about running the water for this purpose. I guess it is upbringing. Growing up in the California desert, I probably would have gotten in trouble for being so wasteful. My brothers and I were always cautioned to conserve electricity, water, anything really just so we didn't run out in the future. So this has been the last 36 years for me. Even now we compare notes. None of my bathrooms have fans as code requires either a fan or a window. All three bathrooms have windows. I just go upstairs and use the bathroom during the day as it won't bother anyone. Since I get up 3 hours earlier than my wife, I use the bathroom in the hall in the morning instead of the master en suite so as not to bother her. So if possible, sometimes a little distance is all it takes.
Wow, you guys have really run out of things to tip about! I never imagined I would think this, let alone publicly comment on something like this...But after more than a year of loyal reading (and generously purchasing from a number of your sponsors), your tips have increasingly become a waste of my in box space. I am the type of person who would just quietly unsubscribe, but it seems to me that if enough intelligent people with purchasing power speak their minds, someone over there may wake up--if you even want to. I'm well aware I won't be missed when I unsubscribe, but sadly, neither will you. Bad business, people. -Amy...off to continue doing her own green research...
Maybe I am that 1 in 10 slob, but I never even thought about this. Who cares, we are all humans!
In many public women's bathrooms in Japan, they've installed a "flushing sound maker" aka Otohime (sound princess) so that women can push the "flush sound" to mask any noises, thus cutting down on wasted water. Maybe it's only for commercial use, but still a good solution. (photo)http://www.toto.co.jp/campaign/sessui2005/otohime.htm
I love it. Who'd of thunk I'd post on a topic like THIS, but here I am. I have no shame. But I do have a tip. Ok, this one can be a bit tricky, but.... loosely draping a length of toilet paper (assuming it's the roll type) across the seat just above the water can be effective - if you position the paper just right. :)
How exactly is running a fan or radio an improvement over running a faucet? It's a waste of electricity. We're animals, and animals poop. You want to contribute to climate change because somene might hear you? Get over yourselves, people.
Speaking of getting over yourselves... Instead of criticizing the Biters, maybe make a suggestion?? A while back I submitted about safe flea treatments and there it was, just last week! Amy, don't be a negative nellie, just make some suggestions!! Think positively!!
I guess I'm with the 1 out of 10. That's what bathrooms are for! But for those of us who are more lady- or gentleman-like, there are also "white noisemakers" that might work well. We have one from Bed, Bath & Beyond.
Why is it that it's a HE who is assaulting someone's eardrums? Sheesh! BTW, I believe that the correct grammar is "couldn't care less" vs "could care less". Love you guys (and girls). Keep up the good work!
I just can't believe that this was brought up as a topic, but I've just never encountered the problem. I mean that I've lived a life pretty much free of roommates (outside of a school dorm). Now I'm married, and if I'm still embarrassed than I should see a counselor. The only time that I've ever run water in the bathroom was once or twice to help me pee when a doctor needed a sample. I think that this is a great site, but this advice is a little silly. Maybe I just don't know how big a problem it is. Everyone should just remember what a huge drought so many folks are having in this country.
