Preemptive Strikes

Shame on you!  I signed up for a tip on green living, and you filthy beasts send out a tip promoting porn! I'm unsubscribing. - Not-Prudish-Just-Proper in Pennsylvania

Dear Not-Prudish: Um, it's supposed to be a little tongue-in-cheek. The tip is actually about curtailing your use of paper and packaged products when there are digital versions available. It's not really about porn. Well, then again, porn can be sorta fun, so maybe you should actually check some out before passing judgment. - Ideal Bite

"Really?  Is this the best you can do? Are you running out of tip topics? Can't you guys come up with better ideas than this?" - Bored in Bedford

Dear Bored: We have hundreds more great ideas ready to publish and would love for you to spend some time in our tip library, checking out our past tips. We also enjoy getting tip submissions, so please visit our submission page , and send us some other topics you'd like to see us write about. - Ideal Bite

I don't read or watch porn - why can't you publish something that is relatable instead of just bad attempts at cleverness? - It's All About Me Me Me in Maryland

Dear Me Me Me: Well, I don't have a dog. Or a kid. Or a weakness for beer or a craving for tofu. I do, however, have many friends who fit those bills. On days when I can't see how the tip applies to me, I generally pass it along to those friends who could use the information to help the planet. My guess is that you probably have some porno-luvvin' friends. Spread the love. - Ideal Bite

This blog post is starting to make me laugh at how it has way off topic.... This message is for Brandi...and everyone else who thinks that just because someone doesn't use porn they are uptight. Some people can be creative without a video, magazine, etc - It is Good to have an open mind... but not so Open that your Brains Fall out....
Carrie, ^5 sista .... (( hugs )) you got the idea !! with this i am signing off as i have som fun things i want to do with the rest of my Sunday . wishing all a good evening ..
Yow! As a first exposure, the porn ref is off-puttting - no matter whose tongue-in-cheek, I don't want to show up on a linked site if it is actual porn and not idealbite being cute. Can you restrict your fun to less volatile red herrings??
According to Oprah, Porn Addiction is an "epidemic". Some Social Scientists that she had on the show estimated that of the 60 million internet porn users, 15% are addicts, so that's 4 million addicts which makes an epidemic. An porn addict is defined as someone who can't control whether they watch it or not and it affects their relationships in that they'd rather watch porn than do anything else including have intimacy with a person and that they even forget how to be intimate with a real person because their sexuality is controlled by porn stimulation and that's all they want. The other 85% are considered recreational users, but who knows whether they will turn into addicts too. There is certainly a risk that they will. Also, there is a big chemical rush to sexual stimulation and being able to get that on the internet can be too easy, and when porn addicts try to refrain from "using", they get headaches, jitters and become extremely irritable (I think I sensed this in some of the comments here). Anyway, FYI
I was shocked and angered to see your bite on porn. The multi-billion dollar porn industry consistently creates images that objectify women; that present women as emotionally stunted, intellectually unchallenging and sexually available. In your attempt to be Green and cheeky you missed the fact that as long as there is economic inequality between men and women (If you think there isn't inequality consider how many women are the head of major corporations, film studios, Universities, hospitals, etc, in relation to men and whether women get equal pay for equal work across the board.), then women are the object in porn and men are the subject. Even when women create the porn themselves they have internalized the male gaze for profit. I would invite you to consider that a large percentage of women working in the sex industry today have been incested or sexually abused; their self esteem and value in the world is contingent on their sexual availability is learned behaviour coming out of a sexual abuse situation. Do we really want to support an industry that perpetuates that belief system? I choose not to view porn because I have evolved beyond the temporary titillation of a possible physiological reaction to understand I am more than my sexuality and I have a choice as to which industries I want to support financially and morally. That's not Green but, it is personal responsibility taken to a communal/political level. And isn't that what you're ultimately encouraging at Ideal Bite?
I must say that this was my first tip from ideal bite and it pretty much bites. Isn't this website supposed to promote health in all areas...how about healthy minds, bodies, marriages, and a healthy view of sex. I don't think porn fits into any of those categories. Let's save the planet and trash our minds...doesn't make much sense to me.
good morning all ... i am sitting here sipping my first morning coffee and have on my FLAC jacket just in case everyone is still at war here at the ideal bite . hope everyone has a great day. my day will be busy starting within the next hour . starting with a grueling 2 hours of physical therapy at cora rehabilitation center . gotta keep my mobility so i dont turn into a lawn ornament ya know . then after that hopefully i can find something to exercize my brain to keep those brain cells renewing and strong . i know it is impossible to solve all the worlds problems in one post but i hope all of you at the ideal bite find ways to help keep life greener to save our earth and to save our wallets as well .this debate has no wrong nor right answer ... it is a choice we all have that live in the good old USA . whatever is right for you do it . i for one do not read porn nor watch porn . that is my choice . and my God given right to make that choice . i find enough interesting things to read and watch . i am not here to sit in judgement of anyone out there . everyone has the right to judge what is right for themselves. i am content with my life and my choices and if i wasnt i would have no one to blame but myself. if it doesnt involve my personnal life why get so passionate about things we have no control over ... only worry about that which we can control in our own lives . i think that is why my blood pressure stays around 115/55 . i do not try to make others see my point of view . what is right for me i do and dont get upset if others dont agree . its my lif and i am in full control . have a good one . peace to all of you.
Okay, Jeanne...exactly who you are kidding? The fact that you took 10 minutes out of your busy morning to write a long paragraph about how you "don't try to make others see (your) point of view" means that you are trying to do just that. You are clearly advocating that others sit on the fence as you are and make their own decisions and never worry about what others are doing or what the impact of their actions are on others. That would be great if we didn't live in a society. But we do and at least some of us can be honest and state our opinions rather than being so self righteous for sitting on the fence. If you really don't care to change anyone's opinion then you won't post again...you'll go do your meditation and physical therapy and whatever you need to do to maintain that great equilibrium that you purport to have.
Wow. I don't usually read the blogs on IB much, but I'm amazed by some of the comments, and the high horses on BOTH sides of the issue. Especially since the actual content of this tip had very little to do with porn, and since there was virtually no *actual* adult content in the email (I'm sure that one "adult" site linked to has their own legal age confirmation stuff on it). Most of the links in the tip were for family-friendly stuff. Use what you can and leave the rest, people. I thought the "screw a neighbor" tip was a whole lot less classy than this one. In fact, I think plenty of the daily tips leave a lot to be desired, but I just delete them and wait for tomorrow's, because a lot of them do turn out to be extremely useful. What I want to know is: do all the tips about booze get as much flak from the folks shrieking, "you're promoting addiction!!!"? As a recovering addict, I can't safely touch booze, but I have personal responsibility for that. I have to deal with liquor stores. I have to deal with people drinking in front of me if I want to live in this society. I get a million spam emails peddling Xanax, for crying out loud! The same would be true for porn, if I were someone with a porn addiction. It's a reality in this society, and you're not getting rid of it any more than you're getting rid of alcohol. Look how well prohibition worked on that. American puritanism is so insidious. I'm amazed that so many "liberal" types (assuming that's the vast majority of the readership here) adopt a "just say no" attitude about porn. Thanks Nancy Reagan. That's a head in the sand argument. Yes, porn is a blight on society. So are drugs. So is alcohol (which incidentally is one of the most deadly intoxicant *drug* known to humankind). Prohibition doesn't work on addictions. Addicts simply become outlaws instead of getting treatment and criminals become rich selling to them. Similarly, ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away. People should have the options to use their vices as safely and as responsibly as possible, because they're going to use them regardless. As long as the problem goes unspoken and taboo, exploitation of the people involved is going to be much worse than if we could better regulate and talk about the issue. I'm amazed at how much so many of the commenters think every single tip needs to be tailored to them and their opinions. Not everyone has an absolutist view of porn. I'm glad there were at least a few sensible voices on here. Keep up the good work, Biters! Even the stuff I don't like or care about is for someone out there.
Colinski...your horse is higher than most on here I'd say. Just because you don't mind Ideal Bite using porn to sell environmentally conscious behavior doesn't mean that we all must not mind. Also, your vague allusions to past first ladies, and your assumptions about liberalism and environmental resposibility sound like pure rambling nonsense, borne out of ignorance...as is your comment about what substance and/or chemical is the most addictive "known to mankind" or whatever sort of hyperbolic and misinformed statement you were making there.
