Preserving My Sexy

I had bad, bad, bad, bad, bad acne in high school - the kind that makes you wanna hand the person a paper bag with cutouts for the eyes and mouth.

A thousand bucks worth of dermatologists visits, two Accutane regimens (hello side effects!), and a whole lotta empty ProActiv bottles later, I found Daniel Kern's product line - he of acne.org fame (acne.org's this online message board where you can commiserate about your breakouts with strangers). The three-step system's free of some of the bad chems in ProActiv (e.g., parabens); it's cheaper; Kern offsets his energy use with wind energy credits; and while it's not Diddy approved, it has Toshio's endorsement all the way.

What do you guys think of adding Pangea Organics to your good skincare list? I LOVE them and they have totally fixed my combo skin, and I'm excited about planting the seeds from the packaging in my garden this spring! :) Sometimes less is more for bad skin (I had antibiotics for SIX YEARS before I quit taking them and my skin improved....
I've been using Dan Kern's stuff for a couple years and I love it! It works even better for me than ProActiv did and it's cheaper so I'm thrilled to find out that it's more eco too! Woohoo!
Tea tree oil didn't work for me - it was too drying. I'm trying antibiotics and some sort of harsh chemical (benzyl peroxide?) for now... but we'll see. Perhaps Dan Kern is worth a try!
I've used the Desert Essence blemish touch stick on my nose for my rosacea. It helps keep the redness toned down. My local Trader Joe's carries this product at a reduced price over Whole Foods.
You can also try an all herbal product put out by NewWorld Naturals called Acne Clear which was formulated by Rowan Hamilton, MNIMH, out of Vancouver Canada. Great stuff! NewWorld Naturals is owned by Dr. Nita Bishop, ND, who specializes in Dermatology and hormone balancing using a herbal/food based approach.
I run a small Organic skin care and massage business and I am always on the look out for petrol free and chem free products since I wish to target teen clean skin. I noticed quite a bit of Chem's in the line mentioned and Prop glycol which is Petrol based. I am happy to give free consult's and to those using essential oils you need pro advice or they will dry the skin and if you are already oily drying it just makes more to protect it.
Thanks for the great tip about Daniel Kern! Does he use salycilic (sp?) acid? I'm allergic, which is one of many reasons I use ProActiv, though I'd love to try his line instead! I'm a huge fan of Bert's Bees products. I love their Herbal Blemish stick. It works fantastically on those breakouts that we girls sometimes get during that time of the month, or any other time, for that matter! ;) You can find it here: http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeI...
My naturopath suggested using apple cider vinegar to wash my face - works not too bad for me.
Yup, Burt's Bees Herbal Blemish Stick (with willow bark, the natural form of salicylic acid), and Desert Essence organic Tea Tree Oil are the ones I was going to recommend. Also, using witch hazel on a cotton ball between washing your face and putting anything else on helps, and Burt's Bees Tomato Complexion soap is great.
I haven't looked into the Daniel Kern products thoroughly yet, but right off the bat I noticed DMDM Hydantoin. I am an esthetician and this chemical releases formaldehyde into the product. It is just as dangerous as parabens when it comes to preservatives. Now that people are becoming more aware of health hazardous ingredients such as "parabens" the manufacturers are using new harmful ingredients so you won't recognize the name. My advice is to research ingredients online to find out if there is any controversy behind them. Also, I do not recommend using benzoyl peroxide for an extended period of time. I use a line called CosMedix and I think it is amazing. Burt's Bees is always a great option for less-serious acne breakouts too!
