She wouldn't share the juiciest bites, but here's a real, live page from Heather's journal.

The Great Elephant Poo Poo Paper Company has some amazing journals here: http://www.poopoopaper.com/journals.htm The pages are made of 100 percent elephant dung (no, they don't smell) and a portion of the proceeds go to organizations dedicated to elephant welfare. I got one for Christmas and I love it.
I make my own journals by using found objects like those "70s" embossed leather purses, or old game boards. I studied bookarts in college and teach classes in my small town in MN. Now all my hardcore hippy friends drop off old games or anything that "Heidi would know what to do with this" stuff. Once you learn to bind journals, you'll never have to buy one again! (except the paper).
Remember on the first Lord of the Rings movie in Frodo's house there was that big heavy looking monster of a journal. That is what a Deep Dark Secrets journal reminds me of. I found one of those big journals on the Renaissance Art site here: http://www.renaissance-art.com/catg87/category.aspx They are 11X14 and 16X16. They also have a lot of smaller stuff but I am saving up for one their Books of Unusual Size.
Regarding the recycled saddle leather books. Leather is heavy. That might be attractive to some people, but I've found that the lighter something is, the more likely I am to actually carry and use it. I had a handmade leather bag for awhile, and I found that some people got extremely covetous of it. I ended up giving it away. That was back in the 60's, though. If I had one now, I'd constantly feel compelled to say "it's recycled!". Wouldn't that get kind of tiring after awhile?
ok, ok. I know the blog isn't for advertising- but my friend makes some awesome journals out of reclaimed fabrics and leather, I just have to post the site. http://www.petraguenthner.com/
