Put On a Lil’ Lipstick

I'm fair, freckly, and blonde, and was not blessed with naturally rosy lips. So I like to wear punchy lip colors like pinks and reds to compliment my green eyes so that my face isn't monochromatic and washed-out.

I come from a lineage of lipstick-devotees. For as long as I can remember, my mom is always armed with a magenta tube of lipstick (my aunt actually bought her a sign that says, "Put on a little lipstick and you'll be fine"), and my grandmother - even when she was well into her 80s - used to ask me to grab her a lil' lipstick.

I have a collection (well, stockpile) of countless lipsticks, glosses, plumpers, lip balms, and lip stains in an array of hues and brands. It's scary to think of all the questionable chems I've ingested over the years, but now I make sure that I get only the most eco-licious lipsticks. Have a fave? Do share.

I swear by Burt's Bee pomegranate lip balm. It smells great and adds a little color.
I don't wear much makeup, so the lipsticks and glosses are usually not my best thing, but I do like the Burt's Bees shimmer gloss in combination with a softer balm underneath. I find that most lipsticks and glosses dry out my lips unless I put something on underneath. I haven't tried the Peacekeepers lipsticks, but the nail paint is great!
Burt's Bees is owned by CLOROX, the largest animal tester in the United States and one of the largest polluters. Why they are still supported by eco-conscious consumers or recommended by a site like this is beyond me. Boycott Burt, do the world a favor.
Agreed. Burt's is total greenwash now and I can tell the difference in their products since they sold. They feel cheaper. I can't bring myself to buy their stuff anymore. Especially when there are so many options that don't give more money to Clorox.
More like Burt's Bleach.
Hate to break it to everyone, but there is lead in Burt's Bees lip shimmers. That's right, lead: http://www.enn.com/lifestyle/article/29561 quote from the article: "In October ”˜07, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released an alarming report, “A Poison Kiss,” on the lead content of lipstick. They found that more than half of the name brand lipsticks tested contained detectable levels of lead. L’Oreal Colour Riche “True Red” topped the list at .65 ppm lead. Even Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer contains lead (.1 ppm.)" AHHHHHHH! I had to throw all of mine away. Never again will I touch Burt's
Yeah, Peacekeeper tested pretty high on those lead tests as well: http://www.safecosmetics.org/your_health/poisonkiss.cfm
Does anyone have a good recommendation on disposal of old and/or not so eco-friendly make-up? Tossing bundles of it in the trash does not seem ideal!
I am looking for a safe lip product for my lips. I work outside and need a safe product that contains sunscreen. Any ideas? Thanks.
Re: the lead issue. While optimally lipsticks would contain no lead whatsoever, sometimes the colorants in certain brands do contain a tiny amount of the stuff. Many authorities don't believe that the levels found in lipstick is cause for concern, though. See the following links to learn more: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lead-in-lipstick/AN01618 http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-pb.html http://www.cosmeticsdesign.com/Formulation-Science/California-s-Attorney... But, as mentioned in the tip, you can check out http://www.safecosmetics.org/your_health/poisonkiss.cfm to find brands that are lead-free.
