Put On a Lil’ Lipstick

I'm fair, freckly, and blonde, and was not blessed with naturally rosy lips. So I like to wear punchy lip colors like pinks and reds to compliment my green eyes so that my face isn't monochromatic and washed-out.

I come from a lineage of lipstick-devotees. For as long as I can remember, my mom is always armed with a magenta tube of lipstick (my aunt actually bought her a sign that says, "Put on a little lipstick and you'll be fine"), and my grandmother - even when she was well into her 80s - used to ask me to grab her a lil' lipstick.

I have a collection (well, stockpile) of countless lipsticks, glosses, plumpers, lip balms, and lip stains in an array of hues and brands. It's scary to think of all the questionable chems I've ingested over the years, but now I make sure that I get only the most eco-licious lipsticks. Have a fave? Do share.

Hey everyone! I've used Merry Hempsters lip balm for several years now, as do the folks at my local natural foods store. My fav is mandarin orange. There are beeswax and vegan options. Definitely recommended. merryhempsters.com
I'm sorry Toshio, but I just don't buy it re: some levels of lead are safe... I think no levels of lead are safe in discretionary products such as lipstick, when we are unwittingly exposed to it in so many other products, such as old paint, and car exhaust. There is NO excuse for having any traces of lead in consumables such as lipstick, as there is no need for it, and there are products that don't have any. ... beauty shouldn't come at such a price... I use miessence organic lip cremes and shimmer cremes (which can also be used on lips and eyes). The ingredients are: organic jojoba seed oil, beeswax, organic vanilla extract, rosemary leaf extract, mica, zinc and iron oxides. I buy it online from: www.anasorganics.mionegroup.com (off to throw out my burt's bees...) Annie
I have a better idea -- don't wear lipstick at all then you won't have to be concerned about what's in it and what's not in it. However, I DO need lip BALM (I don't use lipstick), especially in the winter because my lips get so dry, chapped, and sore, and the ONLY product that's heavy duty enough for me is Blistex Lip Medex. Yeah, I know it's 59% petrolatum, (what? They couldn't make it an even 60%?), but whaddya gonna do. I'm not gonna go around with painfully cracked, sore lips just for the purpose of eschewing petrolatum.
P.S. As for linking parabens and petrolatum to diseases like breast cancer, that's such a crock! You would have to absorb more parabens and petrolatum than the average person absorbs in a lifetime (in other words, RIDICULOUSLY HIGH doses) in order to run even the SLIGHTEST cancer risk. "Researchers" can link anything to anything when they try hard enough.
To Linda: "Yeah, I know it’s 59% petrolatum, (what? They couldn’t make it an even 60%?), but whaddya gonna do. " Use Merry Hempsters lip balm.
i also heart merry hempsters lip balm, the mandarine orange is particularly delicious... but most importantly, this stuff works!!! i have used everything possible to prevent chapped, cracked lips (blistex, carmex, chapstick, labello, you name it, i've tried it) and the hemp oil really seems to work. bad news, though, linda - i don't think you can buy it at walmart....
Thanks, Miranda, but as I said, I need a HEAVY DUTY lip balm and I don't think that eco-stuff is gonna cut it. Sorry.
I was just reading the Merry Hempsters Web site, and their products are made of cannabis sativa (a.k.a. marijuana). Their lip balms don't make you "high," do they???
Do you really think they'd legally market the product if it made you high? I've tried many eco-balms and will never be without my Merry Hempsters. I would consider it heavy duty. Just make sure to get the regular and not the vegan. How can you knock it if you haven't even tried it? Would you rather swallow gallons of a petroleum by-product every year, or something natural that's actually nutritional?
Of course they would, Miranda! Don't be so naive! People can, and do, get high on all kinds of legal stuff. Ever hear of "huffing"? I seriously doubt that I ingest "gallons" of petrolatum by using my Blistex, but I'd be willing to give Merry Hempsters a try, and there are many places near me that carry it.
