Rain Rain, Go Away

In Chicago, the elephant in the room this weekend was Friday's crazy storms. You didn't want to say anything about it, because it was just getting too dull to repeat the same old stories about the weather.

(Twitter examples:
"Rain again, ho hum."
"Great, the power went out."
"Oh, cool, there's a hole in the roof."
"Oops, there went the gutter. A shame, really."
"OMG, just saw mini-van crushed to pieces around the corner."
"Two days later: van still there. Massive tree pinning it to the ground too. Hm.")

Okay, those were all from me. Guess I need to find something else to fixate on other than the weather…But they could've been true for any of us. Which is why I'm going to take this tiny soapbox moment to say - get yourself a rain barrel. What does the torrential downpour from the other day have to do with that? It closed our beaches because of high grossness levels in the water (some beaches less than others). Yep, sewers overflowed (thanks, Wilmette) and were released into the water. A rain barrel won't save the beach entirely, but it'll certainly help.

The sewers overflowing had to be pretty yucky and unsanitary. I had forgotten that Chicago had a beach until I read this post. Does it get warm enough to go to the beach in the summertime? (I'm from Georgia so I wouldn't know.) -Nikki- 1 dollar ebooks selling photography 101
I would love to get a rain barrel, but they are so expensive. Now I'm looking for big container to make my own but unless I buy a big container (still cheaper than an already made rain barrel) then I'm out of luck.
We have two rain barrels. They really are great. We are finally in a dry spell here in Virginia (at least this week we are) so I started using them again; haven't had to in so long since we've been getting soooo much rain.
