Shout Out to the Lazies

Kernel popcorn is great: There's less packaging, it generally tastes better, and it's sort of fun watching the kernels pop and expand into a form ten times their original size.

The thing is, sticking a prepackaged bag in the microwave is so easy compared to using an electric popper or the stovetop method - and sometimes I play that big, lazy American whose religion is convenience, to a T. So when I heard the nation's biggest popcorn producer is dropping diacetyl from all its products, I felt a mix of excitement and guilt, because I know it'll make me that much more inclined, when I'm feeling lazy, to just pop a prepackaged bag in the electromagnetic radiation machine (aka microwave) and be done with it.

But thanks to new Biter team member Hanah, we found there's a middle ground - microwave popcorn made using stuff you already have:

What You'll Need

  • 1/2-cup unpopped popcorn
  • 2-3 tbsp melted butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
  • Paper lunch bag
  • Large bowl
Directions

  1. Pour the popcorn in the paper bag and fold the top of the bag twice, so it's closed.
  2. Put the bag in the microwave and cook on high for 2-3 min, or 'til the pops are 5 sec apart.
  3. Take the bag out and pour the popcorn into a bowl and drizzle it with butter, then toss it with salt and nutritional yeast, as desired.

You have made my year (and just in time!)!!!! I love microwave popcorn, ok, I just love popcorn in general, and now I can make it myself!!!! Thanks!!
This is great, but you should monitior your popping. I had a bag catch fire once. If this happens, I don't recommend spraying the fire extinguisher all over the kitchen if your sweetheart is in there cooking at the stove. Just a tip. :)
There is another option worth looking into...of course, I don't know what the ramifications of putting plastic in the microwave are...but...this little re-usable gadget is great. You measure your own amount of organic oil and organic popcorn (of course), stick 'em in the mircowave and viola! Popcorn without that weird yellow stuff. http://www.tabletools.com/tabletools/showdetl.cfm/3817/presto-orville-re...
I love the fact that you mentioned nutritional yeast to sprinkle on top of popcorn. So good for you... Anyhow, even though I love butter, I just wanted to mention that substituting a good olive oil and sprinkling the yeast on the popcorn makes a great snack too--almost gourmet popcorn!!
I make my popcorn in the microwave in a Visionsware 1 1/2 Qt. casserole dish. You can even make kettle corn with no flaming bags to worry about. Put 1/2 cup popcorn to line bottom of dish. Add 2 TBSP butter (just throw the chunk in, no need to melt first). Sprinkle a generous amount of salt, and if you want kettle corn, sprinkle 2 TBSP of sugar. Cover and cook in microwave until pops are 5 seconds apart.
I use my wok, b/c it gets hot REALLY fast, A little olive oil and salt. delicious. easy clean-up too.
I love to make DIY popcorn, it's been our Sat. movie night tradition for years. BUT if you just can't do without the micro butter variety...Boy-scout popcorn doesn't have the chemical nasty diacetyl in it. And you can support area youth.
Hi! This is just about exactly how I've been making popcorn for the last couple years, and I love it. Only difference is I find that 1/4 cup kernels is usually enough, and I always tape the bag shut. You can even reuse the paper bag several times if you're careful not to tear it open. I got tired of making popcorn on the stove because it always got tough and chewy. This microwave method, however, always makes crunchy popcorn. And it's cheap! Thanks for posting this.
We have a stovetop popper very similar to the Whirley - Pop (but definitely not the same - the paddle knob comes straight up from the center of the lid)that we found at a thrift store for $2. No one there knew what it was! No butter or oil is necessary while popping. We add just a bit of olive oil/butter melted together afterwards to make the popcorn "sticky" enough the nutritional yeast and parmesean stick. Yum! Once you've had nut. yeast on popcorn you will never want it any other way.
I have an old school air popper from my childhood. Anything wrong with using that? Not that you should go out and buy an air popper, but since I already own it....
