Space Tourist

When I was little, I would spend entire minutes staring at the Starfield screensaver that came with Windows back then. Who knew my passion for faux-space flight was using energy, not saving it?

What some people might not know is that in addition to sucking power, screensavers are, in fact, unnecessary, thanks to new computer technology. Bite on that before your next trip on the Starfield Express.

For people that feel they need to leave their computer on at all times there are groups that will make use of your ideal CPU time to do research for new cancer and HIV/AIDES medicines. There is even a group that is using distrusted computing to look for signs of extra-terrestrial life. Google "distributed computing" and you will find many groups that are looking for people to volunteer their ideal CPU time for some very worth while research. Just for the record I am not affiliated with any of these projects just offering an alternative for people that want to let their computer ideal while they are sleeping.
I heard that turning on and off your computer use a lot more energy than just letting it stay on sleep mode. Is that true?
Totally unrelated to this, there are Hot Seat lobby packet delivery events this week to remind our representatives to support the Safe Climate Act. They are being held all over the country at the representatives offices. I am going to one on Friday. It may not be to late to sign up for one. https://secureusa.greenpeace.org/event/launch/647/ It is sponsored by Greenpeace.
Sophie, Turning off your computer will always save energy over using it as long as you turn it off at the power surge strip. However most newer computers are just like your television and other electronics in that they are never truly off. This is especially true of any "Media Center" PC. They will always draw some energy because you can program them to wake up at particular times or events. Overall turning off the computer when not in use is probably the best way to conserve energy. The debate on whether to turn off your computer or not has to do with the wear and tear on the components more than anything else. When you run electricity through something it gets hot. This causes the components to expand. Some people say the expansion and contraction of components through heating and cooling cycles reduces their lifespans.
