Thanks, But No Thanks

I just did something so satisfying the other day. I got rid of all my tchotzkes.

Bon voyage, Eiffel Tower miniature! Auf wiedersehen, novelty Oktoberfest stein!

It's bad enough living in a city where most apartments are small enough to make Thumbelina claustrophobic. Accumulation of stuff that I don't need just makes it worse. That's part of the inspiration behind my extended fam's yearly Christmas donation. Instead of giving each other material gifts, one of us chooses a charity and we all write a check. It's waste-free and goes a little further than yule-themed handsoap or a fruitcake. Last year, I got to choose, so we all donated to Amnesty International. (Check out a few more of The Bite team's fave charities in our Giving It Away tip.)

Next time you're shopping for a gift, just remember that it's the thought that counts. Think before you buy, and you might save your friend a trip to Goodwill.

I loved this posting; as a professional organizer, I see so many people with an overwhelming number of tchotzkes! To help avoid those trips to Goodwill, I've posted a list of 12 gifts that won't become clutter, at http://www.jdorganizer.com/GiftsNotClutter.html
I also regulary get rid of trinkets, or "dust collectors" as my friend calls them. They usually are great for re-gifting, especially secret Santa-type gifts, where you don't know the other person too well and don't need a very personal gift. Just be very careful that you are not regifting to the original gifter, unless all your friends and family are also cheap, or into recycling. Also-if you have a lot of stuff to get rid of, try freecycle.org. They exist in plenty of cities, even internationally. And they regularly have Freemeets, where you can drop off all your unwanted stuff, then browse around other people's unwanted stuff, all free!
Hi everyone here, I have started a new shopping portal - www.topestore.com where I have made my all endeavors to keep the prices highly competitive & a stores directory namely www.safeshoppe.com. I would thank the community here for their suggestion/advices. Please do not consider this a spam. Prashant
I also really need to get rid of all my tchotzkes. I keep telling people not to buy them for me, but do they listen? Noooooooo. It's always "this is just so cute, I had to get it for you." If I get one more beanie babie I might lose it! I've already got a big box of clothes I need to take to Goodwill, and now you've reminded me of all the other stuff I could clear out as well :) ps: I'm celebrating one year as a biter today! Thanks for all the great tips! ~Meredith
