Thievery is Relative

In college, a certain person I know (and I won't be naming names here, but I'm guessing she'll blush as she reads this blog) used to switch the stickers on fruits and veggies, paying conventional prices for organic produce. And while I never joined in, I definitely enjoyed the fruits of her labor. Here I state for the record: I do not condone this behavior, but I am amused by it. Ditto that for my belly.

Add spinach to that list as well. Of all the vegetables you can grow, greens, particularly lettuce are the easiest and fastest (except maybe radishes), and can be grown pretty much anywhere in the temperate latitudes. If you have any outdoor space at all a pot of lettuce will keep you in sandwich greens if not salad. One $1.75 seed packet will keep you going most of the year. The only bad time in northern climes is now, unfortunately. Winter is hard on the stuff, but the lettuce I started a month ago is perfect and will keep in the ground until buried in snow. Old plastic storage tubs with holes drilled in them are fabulous inexpensive planters. Large flowerpots are expensive.
My tomatoes were kidnapped by squirrels this summer, so I hope they enjoyed them. The grape tomatoes escaped and we enjoyed those. Winter lettuce goes in this weekened (I'm in Arkansas) and does better for me in winter than summer.
I've heard that coffee and bananas should also be at the top of the list. Not so much to protect yourself from the pesticides but to protect the farm workers who grow them and critters (birds, bees etc) who live around them. Bananas are one of the most heavily sprayed of all crops, not to mention the fossil fuels burned to deliver them to us. Either skip them altogther or at least buy only organic.
Growing your own is the best way to avoid those high priced organic veggies and fruit. Also participating in a food exchange. We have a table at church dedicated for people to bring in their extra produce to share with others. Last is U-Pick organic farms. By doing the labor yourself, you get a great price.
You should start in planting your own veggies.. Make a small veggie garden in your backyard. Pastry Sneakers
The worst I ever did was steal a walnut when I was about 6 because I liked the way it looked. Valerie Bertinelli Diet
well why should we pay more for healthier stuff in stores and restaurants? More power to her!
I agree with the above poster. Small garden in your backyard is golden.
