Tried and True-ly Questionable

Sometimes it takes a lot to try something new. Last year, I did a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat-we ate breakfast very early in the morning, ate lunch mid-day, and drank tea in the late afternoon. The food was vegan and healthy to the max, which meant no caramels, no wine, no goat-cheese-and-asparagus tarts, no Zachary's pizza. But oh, my, were there condiments and flavorings galore, and after 10 days of brown foods and variations on water, you start getting experimental. Braggs Liquid Amino in mint tea? Why not. Nutritional yeast on raisin toast? Sure. Potatoes slathered with almond butter. Um, OK.

I'd love to say I munched upon an unexpected miracle like bananas and peanut butter, but after a few days of "Hm, I can see why no one else is eating this," I went back to mint tea with...nothing, butter on raisin toast and potatoes, and, yes, nutritional yeast on popcorn.

I LOVE nutritional yeast, and I love this tip. I never knew other people used yeast on popcorn. I grew up in a mostly macrobiotic household during my early years, and one of our favorite treats was air popped popcorn with herbamare, yeast, and canola oil. It is my favorite way to eat popcorn. To this day, I put yeast on my microwave popcorn. Nutritioanl yeast is alos very good as a tofu seasoning. We cut the tofu into slices and then pan fry it in olive oil. Sprinkle on yeast, herbamare, and tamari sauce for a salty, fried treat. All these years I've been eating yeast it is mainly because I love the way it tastes. So it is great to know it has such advantageous health benefits, too.
My favorite popcorn recipe: Pop organic popcorn in peanut oil and top it with freshly grated Parmesan Reggiano and Lewis Labs Brewers Yeast. It's wonderful!
Popcorn popped with coconut oil, then topped with nutritional yeast and a sprinkle of soy sauce is great!
Tasty, yes, but watch out if you have any allergies to mold! Nutritional yeast (well, any yeast for that matter) is, as the latin name suggests, a mold. A real bummer for someone like me who, yes, is a vegetarian and also likes the taste of the stuff.
I agree with Kris! With Candida on the rise, it might be tasty to put yeast on popcorn and the like, but intolorence to yeast/mold/mildue makes this a "no-no." And with so many people being prescribed antibiotics, steriods, birth-control pills that exacerbate Canadida, I'd be very careful!
