Why? Just...Why?

Not to get all Seinfeld on you, but what is the deal with passport covers?

Suddenly I see them everywhere, including a local store that was selling some made out of old bowling bags. I got all excited because they looked like really cool handmade wallets (mine's falling apart and I've been looking for a replacement), but no, these are just accessories that protect your passport from...uh...looking like you've ever used it, I guess?

Now, I'd like to applaud the use of the old materials…very cool. But since when does your passport need a cover? IT HAS A COVER. And it's practically made out of Kevlar - you could use it as a cutting board. Why are we wasting materials to cover these things? If we're spending money on covers, shouldn't we get covers for the covers too? What about those covers? Where does it end?!?

And when did I become a crotchety, 80-year-old man?

-Senior Editor Mike...off to go complain while sitting in a rocking chair, apparently...

I think it's wonderful that they have passport covers because my husband worked overseas for many years and has to scan (or run his passport through the desk if the scanner won't take it) and his cover, kevlar or not, has been completely trashed, even with the passport cover on it. Anyone who works overseas and who holds a passport is required to have it on their person at all times, just in case someone wants to view it. It is the main form of ID in every country he has visited/worked in. His has been sweated on, run through sandstorms, rained on, run over, etc and that passport cover has saved the picture and print more times than I care to count. I just wish, like you, that they made wallets with the same care as the passport covers. Mine, like yours, is looking pretty rough.....
In one your recent articles you badmouthed coffee and built up tea. Have you read all the reports coming out about coffee's attributes? Even if you disagree, are you certain that science has said the total story re. tea or coffee? You alienated me and possibly a lot of other coffee lovers; is that good for your business?
