Yup, I Gots Me a Green MBA

So here’s the deal...I wanted to make a career switch from NYC high tech startups to the enviro-biz world, but I didn’t want to start at the bottom of whatever eco-company I would possibly find back in 2001. So I googled Green MBAs and started to discover the exciting world of profit-embracing preservation (planetary, that is).
I will tell you, though, that I also did it as a stall tactic, as I really didn’t know what exactly I wanted to do, and that two years helped me figure it out (while slogging away at accounting and stats amidst my cool enviro-management courses).
If you have any questions as to whether or not you should go, pipe up, write in...I will definitely try to answer. (Just give me about a week to answer as I will be on VK when you are reading this!)
-Jen...off to Spain to ride in the Castilian Mountains....lots of ROI there...oh yeah...

Wyatt, thanks for mentioning us! I see that you're signed up for our Open House on May 16 -- looking forward to meeting you there. I admire all the programs mentioned here that integrate sustainability into every business course. It's very difficult to green established neoclassical economics thinking, which is why many mainstream MBA programs are not able (or interested) to teach their business curriculum from a sustainability or CSR perspective. One of the organizations working on changing this is Net Impact -- www.NetImpact.org -- and all Presidio MBA students and faculty are members. An invitation to all who are considering sustainable MBA programs: come visit the classes (and meet students and faculty) of the Presidio MBA -- www.presidioMBA.org -- currently the largest of the "green" or sustainable MBA programs. Cheers, George Director of Admissions MBA in Sustainable Management Presidio School of Management www.presidioMBA.org
Rebecca, the Small Business Development Center has resources to help people start businesses. Most of their classes and workshops are free or cheap. They are funded by the federal government and ususally operate through a local university. They will walk you through developing a business plan, getting financing, doing a budget, etc. Good luck!
How about a Bachelor's degree in sustainable living/management??? I'm in California and can't find much for a bachelor's program. Only a few schools throughout the US. Anyone know of any in CA or any that offer distance learning? Thanks, Lindsey Holmes Lindsey
Lindsey, New College in SF and Santa Rosa has this BA program- http://newcollege.edu/northbay/baconcentration.cfm Also, Dominican University in San Rafael has this program, which leads up too thier MBA- http://www.dominican.edu/academics/busedlead/busintl/businessdev/index_h... Both I beleive emphasize sustainable business and living practices. Wyatt
Thank you dearly for the info... much appreciated. Lindsey
I'm actually considering a Master's in nonprofit admin at USF and NYU, which can focus on on CSR if you devote your thesis to it...I'm looking to make a change too and nervous about spending two years slumming as a student... thx for inspiring words!
I got my MBA from ASU. Get paid to post online blogs in forums like this! http://www.mylot.com/?ref=runningman72
http://www.sfia.net/GreenMBA.asp The San Francisco Institute of Architecture offers a Green MBA. Also available as distance learning. If anyone knows anything about this program, I'd love to hear your feedback, as I am contemplating of enrolling..
Question for ANNA: I have the same questions re. the SFIA. Have you received any follow-up information? wacykm@cablespeed.com
Hi Mike, I have found some mixed reviews on the green MBA program offered by SFIA on archinect http://archinect.com/links/detail.php?id=21854_0_26_0_M9 . The comments range from supportive and nurturing to mediocre discussion and one complaint about not hearing from mentors upon submission of an assignments. Keep in mind that these are the personal opinions of just a handful of people. I think their curriculum sounds very interesting and the people behind the program seem to be thought leaders in the field of ecological design. I contacted Fred Stitt, the founder of the program twice and he got back to me right away (within 24 hours). Also, in case accreditation matters to you, be aware that the program is currently not accredited. They are working on it, but when they will get the accreditation is still unknown - it's tricky as it's such a new field. I hope this helps.
