Bite the Big Ones
Submitted by dsimmons on Thu, 10/15/2009 - 11:00pm. Over the past 3 months, we've filled you in on everything from renting designer dresses to exfoliating with a homemade mojito foot scrub (cheers to that). The Big One:
The One You Loved:
Rick Bayless's latest, Xoco - Mexican street food made with organic, sustainable ingredients like grass-fed beef. Mmmm, prickly pear sangria... Runner-up: Rocking out the World Music Festival at Uncommon Ground - with rooftop-grown veggies and local booze to boot.
The One We Loved:
We're still planning our after-work routine around Koval Distillery's organic grain alcohol and the peppery-peachy cocktails we learned to make with it. Runner-up: Picking up a new cowl from Elise Bergman's fall line. We can't decide if it works better as a scarf or a skirt - though that might change post-Thanksgiving (formfitting sweater skirt + the better part of a turkey = not quite the winning combo).
Best Place to Get Mani-handled:
Renew Spa, which'll polish your nails with vegan polish by SpaRitual for a few bucks less than other eco-minded spots.

Bite the Big Ones
Submitted by jharper on Thu, 10/15/2009 - 11:00pm. In the last 3 months, we've given you the skinny on furniture refinishing and eco-investing, and chewed the fat about reusable sandwich bags and organic hot dogs. The Big One:
The One You Loved:
Directions for DIY, DEET-free bug spray. You guys wanna keep irksome insects at bay - or perhaps you just dig any recipe that involves vodka (we do). Runner-up: Rich and creamy organic gelato from Fainting Goat.
The One We Loved:
iPhone app Locavore for finding local, in-season produce. We're still slumming it with a non-iPhone, but we totally dig this cool app and use our cell to access the Facebook version. Runner-up: Sweet-smelling Mama K's Aromatic Play Clay. This biodegradable, gluten-free play dough has been a permanent, stress-reducing fixture on our desk since we got it. Kids, get your own.
Best Way to Get Your Bacon Fix and Still Be Able to Look Your Pet Pig in the Eye:
Pepper Bacon-esque Hummus with Smoked Chardonnay Oil. The new flavor from Sound Bites Sauce & Spread Co., with locally grown garbanzos and Yakima Valley grape-seed oil, gets crazy close to real bacon flavor - and it's vegan.

Over the past few months, we've covered topics including vodka, gyms, and hairbrushes. Some made you wanna kick some polluter butt, and others made you wanna kick up your heels - find out which tips got the most Biters going in our seasonal rewind.
The Big One:
- The Tip That Got Around: GMO and organic produce labels. Who knew you could tell if an apple's genetically modified just by checking out its little sticker? You do, now. Runner-up: NYC editor Brianne's seasonally appropriate Sweet Potato Gnocchi recipe. Yum.
- Links That Got the Love: the electronics trade-in program Gazelle. You Biters jumped at the chance to recycle your obsolete gadgets for cash. Runner-up: Fair-trade, lacquered wood bangles for under $5 from Global Goods.
- The Topic That Caused a Ruckus: Convos about birth control tend to be on the controversial side, so it didn't surprise us when the eco-condoms tip sparked some heated debate. Runner-up: Lots of you chimed in to let us know you took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers program; some of you wondered whether it was really as eco as the government said.

Over the past few months, we've covered topics from lingerie to gambling to swine flu. Some made you wanna hit it, and others made you wanna hit the road - find out which tips got the most Biters going in our look back at the last season.
The Big One:
- The Tip That Got Around: Eco-friendlier weed slayers. You Biters read and forwarded the tip on yard pesticides more than any other. Hate dandelions much? Runner-up: Stopping junk mail.
- Links That Got the Love: PETA's guide to cruelty-free companies. Controversial as the animal rights organization may be, for many Biters it's a trusted source for critter-friendly info. Runner-up: DirectMail.com's free service for getting off junk mail lists.
- The Topic That Caused a Ruckus: Tampon alternatives. The ladies on the list went ga-ga over contraptions like the reusable DivaCup. And then there was the question of whether dogs menstruate…the answer is no. Runner-up: Our April Fools' Day tip elicited either massive laughs or huge groans depending on who you ask.

Over the past 3 months, we've tipped topics from eco-hip heels to halitosis cures. Some made you wanna flick a switch; others made you wanna blow your nose. Here’s the rundown…
The Big One:
- The Tip That Got Around: washing your produce with vinegar. Apparently lots of you were dying for a cheap, DIY way to get pesticides off your fruit and veggies (not to mention a use for that white vinegar collecting dust in your pantry), 'cuz you read and forwarded this tip more than any other. Runner-up: Earth Hour. Thousands of you helped to make this year’s Earth Hour celebration the biggest yet.
- The Link That Got the Most Love: glass drinking straws. Inexpensive, elegant, and thirst-quenching, reusable glass straws from Glass Dharma really got you sippin'. Runner-up: socially responsible big banks. You were curious how yours ranked...and some of you switched when you found out.
- The Topic That Caused a Ruckus: fur. Biters were split over whether Jen was a crazy genius or just crazy for suggesting in the blog that we should support the hunting of paihamus in New Zealand. Runner-up: recycled facial tissues. More than a few Biters (bless 'em) were (s)not happy when we failed to mention handkerchiefs as an even greener option.
