The Secret to Our Successories

Ready to achieve dresser-drawer greatness? Victory awaits at Successories, Noe Valley's newest fashion and accessory boutique - aka our latest love.
Why Care?:
Recycling materials frees up landfill space and eliminates the need to extract natural resources to make new stuff.

Spring 2010 Fashion Party

Can We Get Your Digits?

Hey girl…we saw you over there, looking fashionable, and we thought - you should come to this party. Tomorrow's Local 415 event at Eco Citizen will celebrate Spring 2010 collections by Bay Area eco-designers.
Why Care?:
When you opt for locally made, organic designs, you show eco-designers (and the shops that carry their wares) that going the extra mile to avoid pesticides on their materials is worth it.

Muffins = Good, Muffin Tops = Bad

As most can expect with any holiday season (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.), a little weight gain is in the cards. So what’s a candy-goobling, turkey-lovin’, cookie-snatchin’ Biter supposed to do? Indulge and worry about the weight later thanks to the Muffin Top Stopper. Yep, you heard me right.

Umbrella Bags

Blame It on the Rain

Break about a Milli-on umbrellas every winter? Sync up with Himane, a company that'll upcycle 'em into waterproof bags. You can recycle yours by dropping it off at Sustainable NYC (which'll send it to Himane), or take it in and have Himane make it into a custom bag - or just pick up one that's already made.
Why Care?:
By reusing materials like umbrellas and denim, Himane keeps tons of stuff out of landfills and it helps preserve resources by, er, bagging production of new materials.

America’s Next Top Green Model

I'm 5'2" with an Italian schnoz, so my dreams of modeling are pretty much non existent. My one shining modeling moment was for Marie Claire in December 2007 in their "100 Real Women in Party Dresses" spread (I knew the editor). It was a blast to get all made up and feel like Kate Moss for a moment (minus the…ahem, bad habit).

Would You, Could You Swear Off Shopping for a Year?

I’ve pondered this question, especially after reading yesterday’s Seattle tip on a local girl and 24 other women who plan to turn a blind eye to store windows and shop only in their closets for a year.

Bite the Big Ones

Over the last 3 months we've filled you in on everything from electric cars to swanky vintage stores and even showed you how to make your own
The Big One:
The One You Loved: A staycation in NYC topped your list. You got healthy outside with kayaking and yoga along the Hudson, then grubbed at Josie's West on the Upper West Side. Runner-up: The much-talked-about elevated park also on the West Side, the High Line. You can now head there every Tuesday at dusk for their new free stargazing with high-powered telescopes.

The One We Loved: We spent our last days of summer gobbling up this raw Pineapple Cucumber Gazpacho, which requires only a blender to make - our fave kitchen appliance. Runner-up: We decked our fingers with recycled gold and silver cocktail rings from October Anniversary…our fave, the conch.

The Best Reason to Get Caught in Rented Shoes: Brooklyn Brewery beer, sloppy joes from Blue Ribbon, and bowling in the LEED-certified Brooklyn Bowl building…'nuff said.

Make It: Reusable Coffee Cozy

Mug Shot

Get caught red-handed without your reusable coffee mug? Avoid getting burned with a pair of cuffs - Jen Kuebrich's Go Green Coffee Cozie made from old sweater cuffs, that is. Unlike disposable paper sleeves, these're reusable (just keep one in your bag), helping reduce the 6-10 pounds of paper waste per person per year from disposables.
Go Green Coffee Cozie
10-15 minutes, makes two

What You Need:

  • An old wool sweater with two thickish cuffs
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread (match to the sweater)
  • Vintage or old buttons

Directions:

1. Lay your sweater flat and measure the cuffs horizontally - they should measure at least 3.5-4 inches.
2. Cut off the cuffs on the noncuff side of the seam so it doesn't unravel.

3. If you want, sass them up with a few buttons using these step-by-step instructions

4. If you're on a roll and feeling ambitious, you can use the rest of the sweater to make a matching scarf - just in time for those chilly days.

Put on Your Dancing Boots

Last Thursday in NYC, my writer Yachtz (lucky him) rocked out at the Wyclef concert to celebrate the Grammy winner’s partnership with Timberland (the boots not the singer). I was at my sister’s baby shower but Yachtz gave me the low down.
