Locally Made Cider

Breathe a Cider of Relief

Worried about what to serve pals who don't drink much wine or beer? Relax and stock up on Doc's Hard Cider. It's made locally in Warwick, NY, and comes in three flavors. There's traditional apple with a strong apple taste and a dry finish; pear with a lighter taste of Bartletts blended with apples; and refreshing raspberry added to apple cider and refermented to get that fizzy champagne effect.
Why Care?:
Drinking cider made within a few miles = fewer heavy bottles shipped long distances, which cuts back on fuel and CO2 emissions.

Apple Saucy

As if it isn’t bewildering enough to make green choices at the grocery store, Whole Foods is making it worse. In fact, I’m gonna level a pretty damning claim, folks: I think they’re purposely confusing shoppers about organic vs.

Organic Tomato Jam

Jam Session

Ready to rock…a new condiment? Riff on toast, eggs, even entrées like poached halibut with Katchkie Farm's new Tomato Jam. TJ's made with tasty organic tomatoes - getting its sweet from ginger and sugar, it's sour from cider vinegar - and has a solid kick of cayenne.
Why Care?:
A recent USDA study found 34 different pesticide residues on conventional tomatoes - including two known carcinogens. Going organic means you can stuff your maw all you want, minus any pesticides.

Bird’s the Word

Hey NYC turkey lovers. Thanksgiving is right around the corner…yeah, we can’t believe it either.

Organic Caterer

Secret Service

No time to cook 'cuz you're as busy as the president? Get eco-caterer Jacqueline Lombard to cover you. She'll whip up organic, locally sourced food (as in herbs and produce right from her Brooklyn garden) for your next holiday shindig.
Why Care?:
Ingesting carcinogenic pesticides is one "gift" we don't want this holiday; going organic keeps them off our plate.

Local Candy

So Sue Me

Gotta case of the sweet tooth? Summon Roni-Sue Chocolates for sugary + savory treats - all handmade on the LES with local ingredients from the Essex Market and Union Square Greenmarket.
Why Care?:
Getting a local sweet fix cuts back on shipping CO2 since on average, food travels between 1,500 to 2,500 miles from the farm to your pantry.

Organic Brunch Spot

Na-na-na-na...Na-na-na-na

Hey, hey, hey...say goodbye to your same-old breakfast spot and hello to Nana.
Why Care?:
Organic = fewer pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides in the air, soil, water, and in our bodies.

Local Food Market

Frankly, My Dear, I Don't Give an Amsterdam

Have a love affair with local food? Get your But(ler) to the New Amsterdam Market.
Why Care?:
Buying food directly from the farmer who grew or made it usually means it's fresher and required less fuel to get to you than nonlocal food, which travels up to 2 weeks before it arrives in grocery stores.

Holistic Prenatal Care

Navel Academy

Almost ready to set sail to motherhood? Go sea Latham Thomas at Tender Shoots Wellness for a couple of holistic prenatal classes.
Why Care?:
Ingesting carcinogenic pesticides from fruit and veggies is never a good idea, and it's even less so when you've got a developing baby on board.

Bite the Big Ones

Over the last 3 months we've filled you in on everything from electric cars to swanky vintage stores and even showed you how to make your own
The Big One:
The One You Loved: A staycation in NYC topped your list. You got healthy outside with kayaking and yoga along the Hudson, then grubbed at Josie's West on the Upper West Side. Runner-up: The much-talked-about elevated park also on the West Side, the High Line. You can now head there every Tuesday at dusk for their new free stargazing with high-powered telescopes.

The One We Loved: We spent our last days of summer gobbling up this raw Pineapple Cucumber Gazpacho, which requires only a blender to make - our fave kitchen appliance. Runner-up: We decked our fingers with recycled gold and silver cocktail rings from October Anniversary…our fave, the conch.

The Best Reason to Get Caught in Rented Shoes: Brooklyn Brewery beer, sloppy joes from Blue Ribbon, and bowling in the LEED-certified Brooklyn Bowl building…'nuff said.
