Locally Made Soaps
On Your Soap Box
Submitted by bdisylvester on Mon, 11/16/2009 - 12:00am. Wanna spread the word, not germs? Shout out for some Saipua soaps. These buttery soft (thanks to shea butter) sudsers are handmade in Hudson, NY, with olive oil, herbs, and natural extracts (no petroleum or artificial dyes and fragrances here) - and smell good enough to eat. For mornings, try the Coffee Mint Soap with brewed coffee grounds, and peppermint, or the citrusy Red Currant. Why Care?:
Unlike many conventional varieties, Saipua makes its soaps without artificial fragrances that contain cancer-linked phthalates, which are absorbed through your skin and wash into waterways via your shower drain.

Cloth Napkins
Wipe Out
Submitted by bdisylvester on Tue, 09/08/2009 - 11:00pm. Surf and turf end up all over your face? Wave goodbye to paper napkins and (rip) curl your hands around cloth napkins from Ortolan. They're not cheap, but they're great: Each is printed with a quirky-yet-sophisticated black, red, or yellow design - snails (see photo), crabs, fish, or anchors (you get the theme…).Why Care?:
The average American uses 2,200 paper napkins a year, so opting for reusable, washable options keeps more trees standing; plus organic products keep synthetic pesticides out of the environment.
