Vegan Menu

Desert Island

Think vegan food means getting stranded without flavor? Hardly. Cast away to Desert Rose for its special Vegan Menu, filled with Mediterranean-Californian options.
Why Care?:
A meatless diet is 50% more effective at cutting CO2 than switching from a standard car to a hybrid, so opting for veg-centric meals once in a while helps the earth (and is cheaper than buying a Prius).

Eco-Organizers

Light as a Heather

Cluttered pad weighing you down? Let Heather and Brooke of H|B Interior Organization do some heavy-duty rearranging.
Why Care?:
Hiring these gals means less hassle and less waste - for example, donating or trading unwanted clothing to places like Wasteland or Buffalo Exchange will ensure that stuff stays outta the dump.

Laptop-Notch

Recently I met up with Justina Blakeney, Jill-of-all-trades and co-author of the popular 99 Ways series of books, at Veggie Grill (my new lunch obsession, BTW).

Eco Film Festival

I Screen, You Screen…

We all screen…eco-movies at the weekend-long Green Screen Environmental Film Festival & Salon.
Why Care?:
You can't fix a problem until you're aware of it, and these films help you take that first step.

High Five: Kris Willey

(Net)Working Girl

If you see Kris Willey, creator of Women of the Green Generation, on your way to the top, give her a high five.
What drove you to start WotGG?
Kris: Recently I heard someone say, "If you want to see things change, you have to get involved." My way of getting more involved in the green movement was to start this networking group. It's hard to put a finger on it, but there is something very magical that happens when a room full of women get together and start sharing their ideas, experiences, and ultimately, what is driving them to live and work sustainably.

How do you get around the city?
Kris: I wish I could say that I drive a Prius or some type of hybrid, but I drive a 1986 Mercedes - a classic car but a gas guzzler (and sadly not a diesel). But I live in Redondo Beach and when I have to come to the Westside or Downtown LA, I arrange several meetings on the same day.

What's your eco-confession?

Kris: I still occasionally buy bottled water. I have reusable stainless steel bottles which I can fill up at home and take with me, but they're small and I feel I never have enough water at my disposal - too bad I'm not a camel.

Restaurant

(Thanks)giving Up?

Throwing in the oven mitt on making the perfect T-Day dinner? Bow out and let the French-trained chefs at RH restaurant do the cooking with market-to-table ingredients. They're whipping up a special menu in RH's very cool exhibition-style kitchen, inside an elegant, spacious setting filled with art (some local).
Why Care?:
Most conventional foods travel an average of 1,500 miles before ending up on your plate. Eating food grown locally saves fuel used in transport.

Mama Kia

Not to be confused with the cheesy, ABBA-filled musical, Mama Kia has both an orphanage, Casa de Milagros - with a huge, organic greenhouse and garden where the kids learn about green-thumbing and cooking - as well as the off-the-grid Hanaq Pacha Retreat Center in Peru.
