Recycled Clothing
Mad(rone) About You
Submitted by jharper on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 12:00am. Hunting for new cold weather attire? Reiser to the occasion with Madrone Regenerated Clothing. The colorful, fashion-forward line includes warm and cozy sweater skirts - great with tights - for women and girls, stretchy headbands with felted wool flowers for babies, and hats and scarves for the whole fam.Why Care?:
Opting for clothing made with recycled material saves new resources and helps keep old clothes out of landfills - each American tosses 68 pounds of clothes in the dump annually.
Chasing Amy's
I have my own personal chef. Her name is Amy. She always has a variety of tasty, organic, vegetarian meals - free of additives, preservatives, and GMOs - for me to choose from. OK, fine. I'm talking about Amy's Kitchen.Eyebrow:
Sustainable Sushi
That's What Sushi Said
Submitted by jharper on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 12:00am. Like it raw? It's not so hard...if it's sushi from West Seattle's Mashiko. The cozy sushi bar's made the switch to 100% sustainable seafood. Pick from spot prawns, salmon, and sea urchin from Alaska/Canadian waters, and albacore tuna from the PNW coast for our fave Red Violin Roll (tuna, avocado, cilantro, and spicy garlic sauce). Why Care?:
Scientists predict that most of the world's edible seafood will be gone by 2048 due to unsustainable fishing practices; among the species most at risk: sushi-bar favorite bluefin tuna.

Yoga can contribute to better sleep and a stronger immune system; and practicing in an eco-studio minimizes your exposure to VOCs (linked to headaches and nervous-system damage) and cancer-linked chems in PVC plastic in conventional yoga mats.

DVD Recycling
Welcome to Movie(Cycle) Phone
Submitted by jharper on Thu, 10/29/2009 - 11:00pm. If you know the name of the movie you'd like to see...head to MovieCycle. The new shop buys, sells, trades, and rents used DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, video games, and even some VHS tapes. (What, no Beta?) MC usually pays $1 and up for DVDs (not all scratched), and opting for store credit over cash means a 25% higher payout. Why Care?:
Recycling DVDs and games keeps 'em from littering landfills (these plastics never fully biodegrade); plus, buying used instead of new keeps more bucks in your wallet.
Gray's Anatomy
I just got back from a trip to the Southeast, during which Seattle's gray season moved in with full force. So instead of dwelling on how bummed I am about not seeing the sun for several months, I'm trying to focus on what I love about fall in the PNW:Eyebrow:
Eco Laundry Service
Keep Off the Laun(dry)
Submitted by jharper on Tue, 10/27/2009 - 11:00pm. Wanna tread lighter on your health and the planet while keeping clothes spotless? Step over to Clean Green Revolution for laundry and dry cleaning services. Why Care?:
About 90% of U.S. dry cleaners use perc, a probable carcinogen, which poses health risks to workers and can contaminate nearby soil and groundwater. Plus, perc-cleaned clothes continue to off-gas the stuff into your home.

The slow food movement promotes biodiversity of crops, organic farming, and the preservation of family farms. Plus, teaching folks about where their food comes from helps 'em appreciate the process.

Paraben-Free Hand Wash
Give 'em a Hand (Wash)
Submitted by jharper on Thu, 10/22/2009 - 11:00pm. Want soap worthy of your applause? (Are we really the only ones that cheer for toiletries?) Put your hands together for Dani Natural Products' brand-new hand wash. Why Care?:
Parabens can interfere with the production of our bodies' natural hormones, and SLS can cause skin irritation - so it's best to steer clear when possible
