Beauty and the Feast

The Bite:
Wanna break the curse of dry winter skin? Poof: Just look in your cupboards. The friendly peeps at Evanston's Ecology Center want you to be their guest at the upcoming Kitchen Chemistry: Beauty Products workshop. Using stuff you'd find in your pantry - like olive oil (for moisturizing) and oranges and lemons (which work as astringents and give a real fruity scent), you'll magically whip up a fresh facial scrub and foamy body wash with the help of enviro-teacher Karen Taira (all ingredients and take-home bottles come with). After, traipse away with your new concoctions plus take-home recipes - and keep synthetic preservatives off your bod until the spell of conventional paraben-packed cosmetics is lifted.
Wanna Try:
Kitchen Chemistry: Beauty Products workshop, Feb. 26, 6:30-8 pm (sign up by Feb. 23); Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. Map It (847-448-8256). Workshop, $20.

Cocktail Fact

The very first pink Cadillac was created in 1968 when Mary Kay Ash, of Mary Kay Cosmetics, purchased the car and had the dealer paint it on the spot to match her Mountain Laurel Blush.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters make their own 4-ounce scrub with chem-free ingredients instead of buying a conventional scrub, we'll avert the weight of 333 infants in iffy ingredients.
