Bee(tnik) Poetry

The Bite:
imageWhat beats faster than any bongo-playing daddy-o? Busy bees/and their knees/making honey/if you please…at Beeline’s North Lawndale apiary. Grab a golden jar on the way to your next jam – turns out that bees buzzing in small but horticulturally diverse areas gather more varied nectar, yielding more honey flavors. And local honey won’t trash habitat like its square cousin sugar or spew CO2 as a result of cross-country transport. We also love the nutty smells and creamy textures of Beeline’s handmade, chem-free spa goods, especially the bath scrub and body butter (honey makes for a sweet moisturizer). Beeline earns kudos, too, for giving peeps with a record a chance to start over and gain work experience. Dig?
Wanna Try:
Beeline by Sweet Beginnings (773-638-7058); at select Whole Foods locations and RR#1 Chicago, 814 N. Ashland Ave. b/t Chicago Ave. and Pearson St. (312-421-9079). Honey, $9/12 ounces; body polisher, $18.

Cocktail Fact

Honeybees pollinate 80% of the fruit, vegetables, and seed crops grown in the United States.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy a jar of local, consciously made honey instead of the conventional stuff, we’ll help keep 94 colonies in good worker-bee condition.
