Catch Some Rays
The Bite
Wanna take in some sun without the skin damage? Head to Garfield Park Conservatory's new permanent exhibit, "Sugar from the Sun," opening Saturday as part of the GPC's 100th birthday celebration. Get an eyeful of 60 species of orchids hanging from 14-foot steel "trees," as well as bromeliads, philodendron, and other tropical plantings lush enough to impress Gold Coast decorators and your seventh-grade life science teacher alike. This 6,200-sq-ft indoor show uses lighting and sound effects to explain photosynthesis - how air, water, and light churn up enough sugar to power all life on earth and make it beautiful. And yes, it's a bazillion times more fun than junior-high bio. Hoo-ray.
