City Break: Door County, WI

The Doors

The Bite:
Wanna break on through to the other side? Of the WI border, that is. Ferry over to Door County's Washington Island, home to limestone bluffs, sandy beaches, and where you'll stay: the century-old Washington Hotel. Grab your free welcome glass of prosecco + local cherry juice - and sign up for a workshop at WH's sustainable-lovin' culinary school (vino comes with June's 2-hour Francophile class). After a knock-you-out sleep on soft organic sheets, grab organic, fair-trade joe at the Red Cup (note antique red pickup out front), then bike or kayak around the isle. Dinner? KK Fiske's classic fish boil with a Death's Door gin and tonic - it'll light your fire…or at least warm you up for another round.

Cocktail Fact

The Doors originally planned to call themselves "The Doors: Opened & Closed."

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters learn how to prepare just one meal with local rather than nonlocal ingredients, we'll save enough fuel to drive from Chicago to Door County 20 times.
