Down to Earth

The Bite:
Looking for a no-nonsense way to get local food? We'll give it to you straight: WI's Sweet Earth Organic Farm CSA (community-supported agriculture) program. The big-name CSAs are fillin' up, but certified organic SEOF's taking orders now for weekly 3/4 and 1/2 bushels (Middle Ages-speak for about a grocery basket full) of fresh-off-the-vine produce like rainbow chard and beets (June/July); heirloom tomatoes (July/August); and herbs (all season, summer-fall). Just choose where you wanna pick up every Saturday, then whip up recipes from SEOF's e-newsletter (last year's Chocolate Zucchini Bread = deliciously moist). You'll save the average 1,500 gas-guzzling miles nonlocal food travels and signing up by May 15 means you can pay in installments ('steada one lump sum) to, y'know, stay financially grounded.
Wanna Try:
Sweet Earth Organic Farm, Wauzeka, WI (608-875-6026). Locations include 1831 W. Chicago Ave. Map It; and 4819 W. Berteau Ave. Map It. Full Share (3/4 bushel box), $485; Partial Share (1/2 bushel box), $375.

Cocktail Fact

Scientists estimate that the earth weighs about 6.6 sextillion tons - the equivalent of 206,250,000,               000,000,000 zucchinis.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy only locally grown food from late spring through early fall, we'll conserve 3,705 Olympic-size swimming pools of gas.
