The Bite:
Want a new way to advance kids' learning about where food comes from? Change of engagement: Check out the free Edible Garden in the Lincoln Park Zoo. The Green City Market keeps this 5,000-square-foot plot chock-full of organic vegetables, including spinach, beets, and carrots - all ripe for picking. Stay for as long as you want (and note: the school groups are gone, so fewer crowds), and help volunteers plant and harvest - they'll give you tools and know-how, plus a coupla tasty veggies to take home...and thrust into dinner.
Why Care?:
Organic gardening keeps toxic pesticides off crops, and introducing kids to it helps them learn about nature and healthy eating.
Last month, we turned the soil at the Edible Garden with our friend's 5-year-old while chatting with one of the master gardeners about GCM's plans to fill the smaller adjacent garden with heirlooms in the next few seasons.
Wanna Try:
Edible Garden at Lincoln Park Zoo's Farm-in-the-Zoo; Wed. and Sat., 10 am-1 pm, through October; 2200 N. Cannon Dr. (773-880-1266).

Cocktail Fact

A carving in Luxor, Egypt, reveals that fencing - complete with masks, protective tips, and judges - dates back to at least 1200 BC.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters introduce a kid to organic farming, we'll help future generations learn to care about the environment and what they eat.
