Garden of Eatin’ - City Break
The Bite
Looking to savor some not-so-forbidden fruit? Snack on Greenhouse B&B’s fresh strawberries (Did someone say shortcake? With home-roasted organic coffee?), then spend a sinfully delicious Memorial Day afternoon lounging in the inn’s hammock. Owners Mark and Guia Hoffman grow everything from carrots to currants in their organic garden and orchard – just 90 minutes south of the city – which runs on a permaculture system, meaning the waste from one plant is the food for another. Plus the Kempton B&B uses only organic cleaning products in its four rustic bedrooms (campers are welcome on the grounds too). Escape the garden for a day of hiking or biking at nearby
Kankakee River State Park, but be sure to return for apple cider pressed from last fall’s crop. Talk about temptation.
