The Bite:
imageThink you can't sing the local food gospel in winter? Keep the faith: Small-scale indoor farmers markets are sprouting up in several Chicago churches through the end of March. Look for deliciousness like grass-fed beef from Arnolds Farm and vegetables and flour from Ackerman Farms (certified organic), plus stuff you can't get nearby, like organic olive oil and coffee from Chicago Fair Trade. There're usually nonedibles too - such as goat's milk soap and veggie-dyed yarns. Vendors will vary - about 7 to 14 at each - but most markets will have a café ('cuz who doesn't love eating food before, during, and after buying it?) and 10% of sales go to the Harvest of Hope Fund, which helps farmers in crisis. Amen.
Wanna Try:
Winter Farmers Markets & Meals; various weekends, including Jan. 10, 9 am-1 pm; St. Benedict Parish, 2219 W. Irving Park Rd. Map It (773-588-6484).

Cocktail Fact

In a December 2008 poll, 91% of Americans said they consider themselves religious.

Small Changes Add Up

If half of the food that 10,000 Chicago Biters eat comes from local sources instead of shipped from afar, in a year we'll offset the CO2 produced by 213 round-trip flights from Chicago to Vatican City.
