Made-to-Order Ice Cream

The Inside Scoop

05.27.2009

The Bite:
Morning, Biters, this just in: Wicker Park's iCream Café, with new floral flavors of its sweet 'n' frozen stuff - like lavender, violet, and rose. iC whips up its ice cream on the spot, so you choose a base (it's got soy or organic milk cream), one or two flavors (from springlike specials to more tradish ones like vanilla), and something to blend in (like Nutella or freshly chopped strawberries). It's got toppings too: caramel sauce sundae, anyone? Pull up to the sleek bar and scoop your creation out of a corn-based cup. Special feature: free WiFi.
Why Care?:
Eating organic ice cream means you help keep synthetic hormones and pesticides away from dairy cows and our environment, and outta your belly to boot.
We knew we couldn't go wrong with the soy cinnamon-granola-caramel concoction - smooth with just enough crunch.
Wanna Try:
iCream Cafe, 1537 N. Milwaukee Ave. (773-342-2834). Small, $3.50; Add-ins, $.50.

Cocktail Fact

An ice cream shop in Michigan marketed dill pickle ice cream to pregnant women. Sales were disappointing.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters eat ice cream made with organic instead of nonorganic milk once a week this summer, we'll keep 51 freezers worth of toxic-chem-laden frozen dairy products out of our environment.
