SMALL CHANGES ADD UP

If 10,000 Chicago Biters join local CSAs instead of buying their produce from further afield, we'll invest $6 mil in sustainable local farming.

COCKTAIL FACT

The largest stir-fry on record, whipped up by Wesvalia High School in Klerksdorp, South Africa, weighed in at a heart-stopping 2,319 lb.

Wish every time you opened your fridge fresh organic veggies would appear? Buy a share in a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, and watch it happen. These programs deliver a weekly box of local, seasonal veggies - from bok choy to rutabaga - to a pickup site near your home. The convenience is hard to beat, and munching locally grown carrots cuts way down on fuel used during food transport (most produce travels an average of 1,300 mi from farm to plate). Our faves: Homegrown Wisconsin (a 21-farm-strong co-op) and the popular Angelic Organics. Shares go quickly, though, so the time to sign up is, well, now.

Wanna Try?

Angelic Organics (815-389-2746). Twenty weekly deliveries, $600.
Homegrown Wisconsin (608-333-1227). Twenty weekly deliveries, $575; bi-weekly cheese and eggs shares available.
Others: Kings Hill Farm, Sandhill Organics, Scotch Hill Farm, and Sweet Earth Organic Farm.
