Eco Home Shop

Lucy in the Sky

06.17.2009

The Bite:
…or how 'bout you in Green Sky, a Victorian shop stuffed with eco-awesome home things made right here. Set your kaleidoscope eyes on rainbow-colored deck furniture made from recycled milk jugs (see photo) or Riesling bottles reworked into a blue vino-glass-and-tumbler set. Other gems: vintage kimono purses, RV-shaped birdhouses made outta old license plates, and - these just in - low-VOC, sustainably harvested pine cupboards that you can custom-order…ah…ah…
Why Care?:
Buying summery lawn chairs made outta recycled plastic keeps new plastic out of production and, because these are made locally, you'll avert CO2 from transport emissions.
We mooned over the tangerine Adirondack chair - pricey, but with lounge-able contours and sturdy enough to weather Chicago's summer T-storms for years.
Wanna Try:
Green Sky, 5357 N. Ashland Ave. (773-275-1911). Recycled Plastic Lawn Chairs, $276-$300.

Cocktail Fact

John Lennon often disputed the theory that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was named for and inspired by LSD, saying that it was actually based on his son's illustration of a schoolmate, Lucy, along with images from Alice in Wonderland.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy a chair made out of reclaimed plastic instead of new plastic, we'll keep the weight of almost two El train cars in plastic out of production.
