May the Forest Be with You

The Bite:
Obi-Wanna breath of fresh air? Take a (Sky)walk(er) with your fave kids through Lakewood Forest Preserve and scout 17 endangered species (the yellow-headed blackbird and carnivorous sundew, for starters - no Ewoks), just 40 minutes away. Kids can crawl through logs or make wigwams at the new interactive Learning Gallery - scenes and props all made from reclaimed materials - and, on Prehistoric Discovery Day (April 10), hunt for area fossils. Learn about climate change at the Discovery Museum or just hike/stroll along the Millennium Trail - we spotted a grey wolf (OK, it was a squirrel) near the Broberg Marsh's bird-breeding haven. On the ride home, rest up at Ryerson Woods's lux (for a park), soon-to-be-LEED-certified Welcome Center. Yoda-n't wanna miss it.

Wanna Try:
Lake County Forest Preserve's Discovery Museum, 27277 Forest Preserve Dr., Wauconda. Map It (847-968-3400). Prehistoric Discovery Day; Apr. 10, 11 am-4:30 pm. Admission, $6/adult; $2.50/children 4-17; free/kids 3 and under.

Cocktail Fact

Before deciding to base Han Solo on his friend Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas considered making the character a green-skinned monster with gills.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters support a park that builds with reclaimed materials instead of virgin wood, we'll help preserve a safe, wooded habitat for IL's endangered species.
