SMALL CHANGES ADD UP

If 10,000 Chicago Biters choose native, less thirsty plants for their lawns, we’ll save enough water to fill at least 30 Olympic-sized pools.

COCKTAIL FACT

Architect of NY’s Central Park, F.L. Olmsted (1822-1903), also designed Chicago’s Washington Park and the Midway Plaisance for the World’s Columbian Exposition.

The Bite

Wanna poke around a garden you don’t own? Feel free to trespass on landscaper-historian Barbara Geiger’s talk this Thu. at the Cultural Center. Find out how the roots of our current yen for naturalistic and sustainable design lie with the famous nineteenth-century master landscapers who shaped Lincoln Park (Jens Jensen), Jackson Park (Frederick Law Olmsted), and other Midwest landmarks. After the talk, sneak across the street  for a look at living history in Millennium Park’s Lurie Garden, a heritage design with cool modern features – or wait until May 11 when master gardeners will offer free guided tours. Beware: no dogs, but the park guards on Segways? One giggle could blow your cover.

“Midwestern Designers: Landscaping with Nature” lecture; May 1, 6 p.m.; Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. b/t Michigan Ave. and Wabash St. Free.
