A Real Stumper

The Bite:
imageScratching your noggin over what to do about this year's tree? Solution: Pick up an organic, farm-raised fir, pine, or spruce at Ben's Tree Farm (about an hour north) - either precut or you can cut one yourself. Sure, plastic, reusable ones keep trees growing, but the fakes are chock-full of PVC (which emits toxins during and after production) and usually aren't recyclable. Ben's will replant three trees for each one it sells (stay tuned for our tip on recycling your tree after the holiday), and while you're there you can sip free cocoa, scour the barn for handmade wreaths and tree bling, or hop on a horse-drawn wagon…while you figure out how to get your tree through the door.
Wanna Try:
Ben's Tree Farm, 7720 Ryan Rd., Harvard, IL. Map It (630-279-0216). Trees, $20 to $8.75/foot; pine trees, average $39.

Cocktail Fact

Last year, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree used 5 miles of stringed LED lights instead of incandescents - and they were all powered by solar panels.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy an organic tree rather than a nonorganic one, we'll avert 52 pitchers full of harmful pesticides from polluting the environment.
