Sweeten the Meal

The Bite:
imageGot some sugaring up to do to get the gift you really want? Put this on the table (or under the tree): Katherine Anne truffles, handmade in Chicago with locally sourced, organic ingredients (yep, our farms are still going in winter). Try KA's seasonal concoctions, like the totally tart-astic cranberry-blood orange (see photo) with local wildflower honey from May's Honey Farms and the (commence drooling) pumpkin truffle, spiced up with a splash of rum. Their stylish packaging's made from sustainable long grasses rather than trees, so chomping these instead of conventional chocs helps keep toxic chems off local crops and CO2 from shipping to a minimum. Shake on that.
Wanna Try:
Katherine Anne Truffles, available at Whole Foods, 1000 W. North Ave. Map It (312-587-0648); Pastoral, 53 E. Lake St., Map It (312-658-1250); and Winston's Market, 3440 N. Southport Ave. Map It (773-327-6400). Truffles, $10/3.

Cocktail Fact

Chocolate contains the natural substance phenylethylamine, which is associated with falling in love.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters opt for a pound of organic chocolate instead of nonorganic bars, we'll keep the weight of 198 milk glasses in pesticides outta the environment.
