Tote Eclipse of the Heart

06.29.2009

The Bite:
Every now and then does your bag literally fall apart? There's something you can do: Get a new one at Ecozini, which takes old jeans, retro tees, and logo sweatshirts, and stitches them into over-the-shoulder, hobo-style bags with a late '80s, early '90s vibe. Think perfect-for-the-beach Big Totes (with inside pocket for cell or sunscreen); clutch-size Mini Bags; and reversible hats (shady, floppy bucket style). If you need a bag now more than ever, try a denim one painted by a local graffiti artist - new this month.
Why Care?:
Opting for clothes and accessories made from reclaimed material keeps new resources out of production and old ones outta landfills.
We've got our eye on a bright green denim tote graffiti-d, Fresh Prince style, with no-VOC paint (see photo).
Wanna Try:
Ecozini, available at the Andersonville Galleria, 5247 N. Clark St. (773-360-7730). Graffiti Bags, $50 and up; Mini Bags, $15-$20.

Cocktail Fact

Bonnie Tyler's 1983 power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was inspired by Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters opt for a handbag made from repurposed rather than new fabric, we'll keep the weight of 58 Bonnie Tylers in usable material out of landfills.
