Trashy Treasure

The Bite:
imageCan one man's trashed telephone wire be another man's (or woman's) cuff bracelet? Yep, and the new Greenheart boutique's got the goods to prove it. Located inside the Center for Cultural Interchange, the store is chock-full of colorful and cool eco-conscious and fair-trade crafts from more than 35 countries. We dig the African bracelets made from telephone wires and bottle caps; ditto the impressively sturdy bags constructed with recycled paper labels. Also look out for fair-trade coffee and exclusive green, heart-shaped bath soaps by the women at nonprofit employment project The Enterprising Kitchen...this treasure's anything but trashy.
Wanna Try:
Greenheart Store, 746 N. LaSalle Dr. b/t Chicago Ave. and Superior St. (312-264-1625). Telephone-wire bracelet, $15; Greenheart soap, $3; fair-trade coffee, $10/lb.
