We Rebuilt This City

03.25.2009

The Bite:
On rock 'n'…reused materials from the new ReBuilding Exchange. This nonprof's McKinley Park warehouse stocks 15,000 square feet (five tennis courts or so) of supercheap, reclaimed lumber, doors, toilets, and appliances. RE sells materials donated from local construction sites (like a century-plus-old gothic church door), helping to decrease the 100 million tons of building debris that clog landfills each year. We scored a replacement sink (yes, we needed one, but no, we have no idea how we're gonna install it) - from about 25 options, all at least $100 cheaper than new. RE also spreads the word about building material reuse with sustainability gurus Urban Habitat Chicago and deconstruction pros The ReUse People of America. Gold Star(ship).
Wanna Try:
ReBuilding Exchange, 3335 W. 47th St. Map It (773-847-3761). Sinks, $35-$75.

Cocktail Fact

In 1984, Jefferson Starship briefly changed its name to Starship Jefferson, following a legal battle with founding member Paul Kantner.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy a used instead of new replacement sink, we'll keep the weight of one and a half Beans out of landfills.
