The Birds and the Beans

Wondering where quick-cook food comes from? If you need something simple for an impromptu holiday fete, have the conversation about gourmet soup and chili mixes from Women's Bean Project. No advanced culinary skills required for meals like Marian's Black Bean Soup or Firehouse #10 Chili (which packs some heat) - the trickiest one might be the 6 Bean Organic Soup: Toss it into a Crock-Pot, then add water, tomatoes, and garlic (tough, we know). The beans come from sustainably managed farms in eastern CO, as well as next-door neighbors NE and NM, and everything's packaged in recycled paper. Lots of it's kosher/parve to suit the vegans on your guest list. That's how it works.

Women's Bean Project, available at Marczyk Fine Foods, 770 E. 17th Ave. Map It (303-894-9499); and Whole Foods, 7400 E. Hampden Ave. Map It (303-488-2000). Marian's Black Bean Soup, 6 Bean Organic Soup $6/6 servings.

Cocktail Fact

Wow, just...wow: The National Abstinence Clearinghouse taught sex-ed abstinence classes to kids using rubber snakes named, among others, Herbie Herpes, Albert AIDS, and Lucy Loss of Reputation.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Denver Biters buy a soup mix made with local beans instead of beans from afar, we'll save enough gas to fill the tanks of nearly 100 cars.
