Hell or High Water

The Bite:

Tell your yard it'll have to be the former. After the No Water Gardening class at the Denver Botanic Gardens, you'll know how to landscape with plants that don't need any watering at all - for real. Panayoti Kelaidis, DBG's senior curator (he's to thank for its snazzy Rock Alpine Garden) and author of a pile of articles on xeriscaping, will explain what kinds of plants grow best in our dry climate and are purty besides. (He gets bonus points for his casual, irreverent style.) A couple hours later, you'll leave with a list of over 50 plants custom-made for our mile-high region. Guaranteed.

Wanna Try:

No Water Gardening with Panayoti Kelaidis; Jan. 22, 7-9 pm, Denver Botanic Gardens, Gates Hall; 1005 York St. Map It (720-865-3585). Advance tickets, $25/members; $30/nonmember.

Cocktail Fact

About 80% of U.S. water goes to irrigating crops.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Denver Biters water their gardens for 1 hour less in 2009, we'll conserve enough drinking water to hydrate a million people for a year.
